OK, maybe I am dreaming, but I hope I am not. What I want is a levitation, (ether of myself or an assistant...assistant would be preferred) that is easy to perform, cheap (not so cheap that it looks awful), visual, and portable. Set up would be ideally: Minimum. Possibly even portable.
Am I dreaming or do I actually have a chance of finding this? Thanks of the help in advance. -Jacob

PINCH!!!!!
Been there dreamt that before myself. Here is the straight scoop young skywalker. New to the magic force you are. The illusion you seek eludes your finances. Those within your reach do not pass your judgement. Finances matter not...judge your show by finances do you??? Hmmmm??? Beware the dark side of " gotta be sensational to be good" Learn the power of the cheap side and work your way up. Inexpensive levitations do exist ...even here on the Café but your eyes must be opened to see them. Many Café Jedi who pass before you succeed on such a path.. follow them you must. Best, Tim |

Ha, thanks Tim. (if you don't mind me calling you Tim)
I had to read that a few times to get past the Yoda Speak. Let me quote you and answer and ask questions at the same time. "New to the magic force you are." That would be true and not true. I am new to the Grand Illusion of magic. Yes. I am still learning and always learning. But that's something that has to happen. "The illusion you seek eludes your finances. Those within your reach do not pass your judgement." Which ones would this be? I would love to see my options. "Finances matter not...judge your show by finances do you??? Hmmmm??? Beware the dark side of " gotta be sensational to be good" " Finances matter unfortunately. I am not rolling in the cash and need to start somewhere. I know there are some amazing levitations out there with a heavy price tag. But I must be sensible. Is it right for me to drop 5k that I don't have...hmmm Does it have to be sensational to be good? No. Acting is what it takes. But I am dreaming here...I am allowed to dream arnt I? "Learn the power of the cheap side and work your way up. Inexpensive levitations do exist ...even here on the Café but your eyes must be opened to see them." Maybe someone can be a guide and point to which direction my open eyes should look. "Many Café Jedi who pass before you succeed on such a path.. follow them you must." I would love to follow in the footsteps of the amazing ones who have shown the way. But shouldn't I also not be afraid to find a path myself? Thanks again Tim. Your Pinch means a lot. And I look forward to more info. -Jacob

Hi Jacob,
Glad you enjoyed ( and got the message of ) my Yoda speak. In English it goes something like this. I have always loved levitations. When I first started out in the larger stage magic I can remember having visions of some " Copperfield style" levitations. I remember seeing an ad in Linking Ring for Walter Blaney's ladder levitation. I remember thinking... " C'mon.. its a board that girl is floating on... why would you need a board????" I wanted a free floating girl like Copperfield and not any stinking board illusion. Well here is is years later and I would give just about anything for one of those Blaney ladder levitations. While I was dreaming of a huge monster of an illusion to set up, that very few clients would be able to afford or have room on their stage for.... others others were using such " board illusions " and working full time. Not only is that illusion a winner but its so portable it can go anywhere. A small show can now include a levitation! I know the Blaney Levitation is out of your league but my point is don't dis the solid/proven illusions for the pie in the sky ones. Example.... Client calls me and says....." Can you make a person float for us? " and my response is.... " No. But if you have a huge stage and huge budget I can. " and they say... " Magician John Doe can" and then I say.... " You mean the trick where they put a person on a board across two chairs and pull one away? " and they say.... "Yeah.... that's the one....the one where the person floats." Guess what???... John Doe gets the job instead of me..... and the next one and the next one and pretty soon he can afford the next step up and before you know it he is doing those expensive floating illusions. Hmmmm... now why didn't I think of that???? that's right ... I didn't want a stinking board.. LOL. As I matured in magic I learned how ignorant my early attitude was and how much it had held me back. I eventually figured it out and was able to make a decent living out of performing. Along the way I also learned that some of my best reactions were from the very cheapest of props. If I can pass this along to any newcomers that have the brains to take heed then I'm happy to do it. They can either take my advice now or remember it down the road when they figure it out for themselves. Regarding cheaper levitations.... The Blaney Suspension 3001 is much cheaper than the ladder levitation and if memory serves there is a introductory sale on them at procraftillusions.com . I myself have the pdf plans for the multipurpose levitation and can't wait to have the time to build it. It's not expensive at all. There are several people here in the Café who do suspensions ( and I bet they are working a lot more than you think. ) who would be happy to advise you as well. My main point is ..... there will always be some thing that bugs you ( about the cheaper levitations ) as the young performer that wants to have the best levitation ever.... " why is there a board with a carpet under it???? , but they only remove one chair!!!!!!, she doesn't float off of the broomstick!" These things will bug you much more than the audience so put some imagination into it and get out there and just PERFORM.... the rest will take care of itself. Good Luck. Best , Tim |

I understand Tim,
And thanks for taking the time to help me here. You are very right and have hit the nail on the head as for me not wanting a board. I believe I have actually used those words myself. But I see that they can hold much potential. The reason I was looking for such a levitation I mentioned was too see if I can find one that fits the conditions I will be performing in a upcoming show opportunity. I do own a few levitation plans, but none that will work for the conditions. If anything comes to mind, let me know. Thanks again, and I must say agree with Jon Dee, You are definitely a Jedi Master. -Jacob

The muti-purpose levitation might be something you would be interested in. It's not too expensive, although it is not a solo performance.

The price of books is cheap in comparison to purchasing illusions, because, there is storage, and getting them to and from location.
Yes, tim, I really enjoyed that post, so true!.

First off, Timmy can be very persuasive. What are the angels for this levitation? What other things do I have to worry about?

I'm not trying to sell you on a Ladder Levi but mostly trying to make the point that " that board" is ok for guys like Copperfield and Burton so its ok for us as well. Here is a link of Lance using one. http://www.timothydrake.ca/images/ladderlevi.mpg I'm not sure the angles on the supsension 3001. You could ask procraft illusions that one or Walter himself. Thanks for all the help. Maybe I can buy the plans to the levitation and build it myself. I will have to do some e-mailing and calling.

Just wanted to add that if you like to build your own stuff you might want to look at the multi-purpose levitation. You can purchase the PDF online. I did and they are very detailed blueprints. A busy schedule is the only reason I have not yet built mine.

I will have to check out the multi-purpose levitation too then.
Ahh, Just looked into and it does require a back drop. Dang I hope Tim Doesn't see me as naive, or thick headed when I ask this next question... What can anyone tell me about this levitation: http://amaze.freeyellow.com/levitation.html The Dev-Ray Levitation.
