All right, Magi, bear with me...I grew up in an era where popcorn was made in pans on the stove and the "remote control" for the TV was whichever kid brother was closest to the dial. Hey, that "Pong" commercial with the tennis pro you laugh at? Listen up, Juniour, Pong was cutting edge back in...oh, never mind.
Anyway, I recently got an MP3 player, and it's a lot of fun. BUT...when I transfer files to the device, apparently I have no control over the volume, SO playback can be weak. There's probably some simple tweak you technophiles will laugh at me for not knowing, but any help would be appreciated. Tech specs: SanDisk Sansa M230, sychronized using RealPlayer 10. Thanks very much, Leland |

The MP3 files are typically recorded at full volume and you control playback from your player. Are you saying the volume button on the right side doesn't work? It really should. These things usually work great.
Are the quiet songs ones that were originally MP3? Or ones you converted from CD or some other audio source via RealPlayer or whatever. You can test this by finding a good, loud MP3 file, and transferring it to your player straight from your computer. It should play exactly the same as it did before. If it plays fine, then you might not be converting the bad files properly. There might be a "Record" level you need to adjust to get a good sounding copy. Not having your player in front of me, I'm just throwing out ideas hoping to steer you toward finding an answer. Let me know how it goes.

Not all music is recorded at the same sound level.
There are utilities to modify MP3s so they all play at about the same sound level. http://www.mp3doctor.com/normalize.htm The idea is to use such a utility and then send the files to the player. :)

Leland? Which is it? Do you suspect the source files are recorded too low? Or did something (RealPlayer) convert them improperly? Or is the player simply malfunctioning?

I would guess that each file was recorded at a different sound level. (Like Mr. Townsend said) This can be really annoying if you don't change them all to have the same level.

Dave, Jonathan:
Thanks for the input! It looks like the player itself is working properly (on a side note, the sound reproduction quality is simply astonishing!) When I use the MP3 player for FM tuning, its sound is acceptably high and the volume control works quite well. Tracks I've "ripped" from CDs have volume levels from "acceptable" down to "barely audible" (despite full gain on the player's volume control). MP3 files I've downloaded to the device have similar wide ranges in volume. I'll check into that MP3 utility program -- thanks again! Leland |

I have used Musicmatch program for burning and capturing files. Once files are selected for burning, they can be volime levelled within the software.
