I am in the middle of building Hospitality from Steinmeyer's book. He says to finish it in a wood grain stain, which I'm doing. But he also says to finish the top in white, like kitchen colors. What I'd like to know is how have any of you finished it? I want it white, but don't know if I should use formica, or just sand the hell out of it and paint it. I have little excperience with formica, so making the holes in that will be difficult for me. I will be happy to post pictures of this when I'm done as well.
Thanks, Brian

If you are careful, you can work Formica with similar tools as plywood. You just have to cut with the face on top and use extra care to support the back side when using a table saw. Also, since it is thin, it will tend to raise off the surface when using a saber saw, so it should be clamped down. When using a saber saw, use a fine blade and cut from the back side.
Once it is glued to the table top, however, you can use a hole saw and drill press, or a saber saw to cut the holes. If you use a saber saw, however, put masking tape along the line on the Formica side, and cut the hole from the back. The Formica might tend to lift or chip if you cut the hole from the top, due to the fact that a saber saw blade cuts on the upstroke.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

I just used a self adhesive wood grain finish sticker. I painted the whole prop in enamel white paint then applied the sticker. That's much easier than formica finish.

Lou, Where can I find this sticker finish? I assume at a craft store like micheals? Also, does it come in plain white as well? I want the top to be white, and all other surfaces wood grain.

Sitck it down with contact cement. Cut/trim it with a router and a bit designed for laminates. You'll be sorry if you try to use a power saw to cut the holes.
