John Lovick wrote the review and it was hardly a pan. He pointed out things he liked and things he didn't like. He gave opinions. Some people will agree with his opinions and some won't- that's the life of a reviewer.
It's tempting to post the whole thing here, but that would probably violate a copyright. I will post a couple isolated sentences from the review, pro and con: Quote:
It's [the making/release of these DVDs] an effort I applaud, and many of you will want to own these disk- if you get them for the right reasons and know what you're getting Quote:
There are some nice stories... these stories were of little interest to me. Keep in mind, this is just my opinion. You might love listening to [the storeis] Quote:
As a learning tool, I think the explanations on this video are inadequate Quote:
these disks are worth the money |

If Lovick was watching purely, as it seems, to learn tricks and didn't care about the stories then that explains his review. The real secrets are in the stories, thoughts on presentation and performance and how to walk the stage. I found the explanations to be fine and complete enough. If they had decided not to include the stories about Slydini, which wouldn't have made sense, they they could have done what others do and show the same thing in the explanation from 14 different angles to fill time.

Lovick has a pretty stong reputation as a thinker in magic...i have read his book and I'm duely impressed by him...i have personally had a dozen magicians come up to me and tell me they cried at the end of the dvd...along with that it has been mentioned as one of the greatest magic dvd sets ever....mr lovick certainly has a right to his opinion and I wish him well with it...its ok...but I think its a positive contribution to close up magic for magis around the world to see...we will always be proud of this work....

The DVD set is really wonderful.
There is other footage of Slydini out there. I had the privlidge of knowing him very well. He explained that because of legal issues and tie-ups, much of this additional material would not be availble for years, if at all. I trust that some day, this additional footage will be made available to the community. |

I posted them as I thought they were a fair sample of what he wrote and that it wasn't a pan. You'd need to read the whole review to see if you still think je was just watching to learn new tricks. I'm hoping to have time to watch the DVDs this weekend. Until then I don't know if I'd agree with his review or not. But whether I agree or not, I think it was a fair review. |

I have no ill will towards lovick for his view on the project....as a whole the industy has givin them great marks...we knew going in that there would be a certain anount of magicians that would think that the stories were not important....but this set was a tribute to Slydini and knowing who the man was I think is more important than the trick PLUS understanding how Slydini approached magic is a huge lesson....again, we are proud of these...its someting really that has never been attempted in our industry...its very different....so we knew there would be people who didn't get what we were trying to do...and I'm not sure that lovick was one of those...maybe he got it and didn't like it...maybe he got it and thought we could have done a better job...but it has done well, and until this review has faired pretty well in the industries eyes

I have not read the review but ..
Regardless of your opinions as a reviewer, if the product is good you need to make sure that's what the reader is left with. And for a DVD set that is this strong, the point should be strong as well. Saying "I hated, A, B, C, and D but it's worth the money" is not how I would do a review of something I loved overall. How can someone with a great love of magic not appreciate the stories. HOW. HOW. HOW?????? Again, I've not read the review, but the DVD set was one of my prized possessions for so many reasons. Even if there were no explainations at all. Great work Kozmo. Come out to california and I'll buy you a big ol' beer. And bring the Tong DVDs with you

Does this seem like an intellectually honest position for anyone on which to base a post or opinion? I do not own the DVDs so I can only comment on my feelings after reading the review. As I have read the review, I did not consider it a "pan" at all. However, it was also not the "a great time was had by all" palaver that plagued magic reviews for years. I found the review thoughtful and well reasoned. I also walked away thinking, "I should really invest in this set." And, knowing that which Lovick's review discussed, I think I would feel much happier with my purchase knowing what I did prior to purchase. Now, the disclaimers. I know John Lovick. I admire his reviews and his honesty. I also have had the honor of spending time with Slydini's students. In the latter case, one always walks away with a feeling of awe, respect, and admiration for the depth of thought and attention to detail Slydini applied to his material and his teaching. The reality of the world of DVD as a learning media is that one can NEVER capture the full scope of information needed to master magical material. A lot of material can be conveyed, but ultimately, it will never match what is available from personal instruction or even via the printed text. (There may be a published discussion on this is relation to a recent marketed item which fairly well establishes this point.) Of course one cannot put someone in a room with Slydini. But what I gleaned from the review was that while these DVD's are worthwile and instructive, that their very format runs counter to that which was essentially what made Slydini and his teaching so unique. Is that a pan or - given the number of people who count the number of tricks they "know" by the number of DVD's they own - a thoughtful and pointed commentary? Having read the review I walked away wanting to buy the set. "Pans" don't leave one with that desire. Brad |

Mark Wilson was the most prominently featured performer (along with an early solo performance by 13 year old Greg Wilson), but there was also a terrific segment featuring Slydini. I also have a copy of a home movie from a private party for Tony Spina that features Slydini and Frank Garcia. Rough footage, probably shot with the original betamax camera in the late seventies, but enormously interesting to watch. |

I just wanted to say I have available the Dick Cavett special "Hocus Pocus it's Magic" in VHS format (very clear with no distortion). Slydini performs his coins through the table and his best ever, the ONE coin routine. He also does a (I had never seen this ) silk production commencing with a fountain of silks and a huge American Flag. All the acts were really good on the special, including Siegfried & Roy, Blackstone Jr., A really funny, The Great Tomsoni & Company, and as mentioned Mark & Greg Wilson.Tape is approx. 84 minutes long. This is an original tape in the original cover and for sale as I have 2 of them. Rennie
