Aside from her own claim, did anyone else consider her a punk?

Perhaps she spelled it punq?

Or has some idea that real punks are trained and rehearsed by rich parents in a basement studio.

Nothing against her or her music.

I use punks to light fireworks so Avril Lavigne is a piromaniac? I don't get it.

Avril Lavigne is not Punk. The closet label you can give her is pop-punk, like Blink 182 (which also is not Punk, but a pop version of the musical style). The only thing they have in common with Punk is a proficiency for using 3 chords on a guitar, much like all modern crap... I mean "rock".
She also is not related to Goth, so don't even suggest it!
If anything she's closest to Emo (ohgodno!).
<--not a hater.

Neo-Swing, however, is punk. It is anti-mainstream, does it's own thing, bucks the trends, doesn't sellout (and takes real musicianship & sounds good). Furthermore, Swing is deeply rooted in American culture dating back to the 1920s.
I'm not just a magician, I'm an interpreter of Reality.
Underground, above ground, whatever. I don't need a label, thanks.

I'd say not even pop-punk, just pure sugary bubblegum. Yeah, I know, the Monkees were bubblegum, too, but they at least had Jimi Hendrix open for them ...

Just (finally) got Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks" - someone said it was proto-punk like "The Velvet Underground & Nico", and I agree. For the thick jazz influence, it has a certain creative subversion that was unique in '68 and can still hold its own almost 40 years later. Shades of Phil Ochs orchestration (I think Phil hit that phase a few years later) and so not mainstream, not a single track that I've ever noticed gets airplay.

Neo-Swing - brings to mind the Michelle Shocked Campfire Tapes. Definitely in the punk realm.

I would agree Avril is bubblegum - 'punk as a fashion statement' For we geriatrics who were around for original punk it's all quite humorous. While I hum along with the tune the current song where the singer wishes she was 'a punk rocker with flowers in my hair' really cracks me up. Someone vanish her history teacher! Razor blades, safety pins, a ton of hair lacquer, but no flowers.

Most music that is composed in any genre (rock, punk, metal, dance, country, swing, jazz...) is pop formulated. That is verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-verse-chorus (with minor variations).

Although there are artists in those genres who pushed beyond that formula. The downside is that, in order to make money and to distribute your music, you have to use that formula most of the time to get people to listen to the non-pop stuff. Electronic music, classical and jazz artists tend to push beyond the standard format the most.

One group who were pop but often thought of otherwise
Nirvana (complete with studio layered vocals on the Nevermind Album)

Punk is porcupine slippers.

Punk is the guy that purposly barfs on your shirt when you're putting the mac on yet not minding landing in the hospital as a result of his actions.

Punk is "Kill the Umpire" at a baseball game, and the umpire gets killed, then slaughtered.

Punk is betting the family's welfare check on a football game, losing, and then burning down the stadium, and not minding landing a long stretch in prison as a result of said actions.

Punk is Anarchy. Punk is Entropy...the doctrine of inevitable social decline and degeneration.

The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I've a many curious things to show when you are there.

Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair
-can ne'er come down again.

What's with the avril bashing? Personally I could care less what she claims to be. She's Canadian and I'll defend anyone on that fact alone Smile

I miss WOW. She was an amazing talent, and unfortunately she didn't even know how great she was.

I saw her on don cursners (spelling) rock concert late one Fri or Sat night and all I remember is her throwing a stick of dynamite into a car and it blowing up.

Oh, and her ni@@les were cover by small pieces of black electrical tape.

Does anyone know the work of German punk Nina Hagen. She's done an album with an orchestra and performs classics like Somewhere Over The Rainbow - she's magic.

Nina Hagen is old school bizarre punk. I always considered her more experemental than anything else.
But she is definately more punk than Avril.
