I received a question from one of the readers of Sideshow World.

I'm going to post it on several DGs to get feedback and ideas from
everyone that wants to share their thoughts.

I will be posting the info to the reader on Sideshow World.

I have my own thoughts about what it is and would like all of yours.

WHAT'S THE CARNY CODE??

Thanks
John

I asked my Canary but I couldn't decipher his song answer.

But seriously folks...if you meant something like 'the code of the west' type thing...never heard of one (which means nothing)...if you meant code like in Secret Code...the marking of the backs of high rollers with a piece of chalk etc...that's another thing...if you meant the language of the midway...like '1st of may'...'Front End',slough...donniker and all that stuff we can help you out.

Define the question for me.
The above is not for posting on SW

Two parts...

GTFM

One of us...One of us...

That pretty much summarizes it as I understand it.

The Carny Code? No offense towards you John, as I know you are asking as a service for someone else, but if someone doesn't know what it is, they are not with it and won't understand.

Hi Todd,

No offense taken, I posted the question to see what everyone's thoughts were about it.

I found that asking has given me a lot of interesting feedback and has gave me some different perspectives to what it means. Most of all a lot of humor.....

I have received posts on other DG's that say the Carny Code is only for those that are with-it and shouldn't be shared with others.

Thanks for all support and thoughts.

Carny Humor on the Carny Code.

The code appears to be as follows:
Think of something good.
Invest your time and money to perfect it.
If it makes any money at all...
I'll copy it !!!

The Carney Code as refered to by Homer Simpson (and Tod) is one I was never priviy too as I was never a Carny. Never worked with a carnival...worked around them (Independent Midway) but was never part of the actual scene. (Circus is another story) I was a Showman not a carny (big difference) and saw early on that the usual Midway clientel, punks, (under 18) was not actually the group that I wanted to show to, to reach the most bodies...Families with kids. So I never set up on the actual midway but elsewhere on the fairgrounds. Well, wait...I did once at a fair in Carson City (had fun too!) but was never versed or rehearsed in any code.
I had my own code and that IS a secret. Smile

That Carson City County Fair was a blast to do...I had traded space for my show trailer by doing the PA announcing for the Demolition Derby. (I did a lot of speedway announcing back then). It was a good thing in another way...a guy stopped by the show from some off the wall TV cable show and video taped the set up. It's the only video I ever had of my little 'Lost Pygmy Tribe Of The Amazon' show.

Anyway...you can have been 'with it' and not know the Carny Code...but looking around at the many Carny's, I knew and saw maybe I didn't want to know.

The Code of the West, being bound by an unwritten code of conduct, values of integrity and self-reliance guiding ones decisions, actions and interactions is to my liking however. No more than the Golden Rule.

Thanks Doug

Ooh, the Bart Carny episode - that is a great one - where Cooder takes over the Simpson's house and refuses to leave. very funny
Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

That was on here the other night. It was funny.

This past SEAM convention, we had Alabama IBM TVP, Bruce Walstad present a lecture on carnival game fraud. As a former Chicago detective, he became quite the expert in this area.

This was an unbelievably cool lecture, very well presented, and one of the convention hits. He had a lot of vintage games to demonstrate, some of which had been confiscated because of their fraudulent nature. There were some pretty ingenious mechanics in some of them. If you can ever talk him into doing it near you, I recommend it highly.
