Herd of an incident where a magician after producing 4 spong balls from his mouth got a kid up to help.
Using the same balls, he went into the standard routine with the helper. The kid's mother was very upset to say the least. I do not produce anything from my mouth in my shows for fear that the kids may grab on to the item. Another problem is sanition. I'm quite sure most magicians don't wash the sponges afterthe performance. Would like to get posters comments. Richard |

In regards to sanitation, I always bring with me a very small bottle of sanitizer lotion. the bottle is so small and I have them in most all my cases. every show I use it just to keep germs off of me and to keep myself clean and such. They work great.

Hi Kyle.
Good to hear from you again. I see that you take precaution as far as sanitation goes. But, do you have concerns that the kids may run up and grab unto the balls. Richard. |

It is funny and most here will laugh when I say this. I do not even perform sponge balls. Isn't that crazy? I just never really got into them. I own a lot of them but they sit in my magic bin not used. One of these days I may have to get them out again and create routine that works for me.
To answer your question, yes kids can run up and grab stuff. This is why I try my best to create certain things in my show to really make it so that the kids know that they should not run up during the show but sit down and have fun from their seats. Without going too much off topic, this is done through my rules that I establish at the start of the show on how I pick assistants. It also carries over to how I pause the show and speak softer and I need the children to behave. Now I would never do anything like the magician did that you stated above. Doing balls from mouth and then placing that ball into a child's hand is just bad entertainment and not something I would do as a professional enterainer. I think sometimes we magicians get so caught up in the routines we create that we sometimes lose the simple notion of common sense. kyle

Richard,
I performed a continuous sponge balls from the mouth at shows this summer. I never worried about kids running up and taking them because at the end of the routine I put them all away. I certainly wouldn't use them in a routine with another person after that though. That would be unsanitary for everyone -- including me. It certainly wouldn't leave a great impression on an audience either. As for cleaning the sponge balls, I washed them after every performance.

Hey Richard,
Long time no see. I solve the problem of doing an "in-the-hands" routine after a ball production from mouth, by using balls of a different colour. That way the audience (of kids, parents, teachers, germ police, etc.) know that they are not the same balls. Most ball productions from mouth happen in the magician's mouth(!), hands and pockets/case/hat, etc. Balls that are produced from the mouth shouldn't be available for anyone to grab. BTW Wash your balls guys (and girls). Bill Abbott |

That's pretty unsanitary but what would be worse would be putting them in your mouth after they've been in a kid's hand, yeuch. Although Kyle has given me an idea; I may purchase a very large bottle of sanitizer lotion and spray each kid as they walk in.
Of course, the irony of the situation is that only one of the four balls has been in his mouth so the 'saliva sponge' may never have been in the kid's hand. George |

Hello Bill.
Your routine is a bit different The balls are handled only by you and not the kids. Actually, I like your handling and the way you're able to get laugh as the balls pops out from your mouth. The only concern is the sanitation. Great idea of using ponge balls of different colour. Richard. |

Folks,
I have been working on Bill's Sponge Snack routine and making sure my props are clean and for my use only is important. When doing a kids show, I gig as a Magic Pirate. I make the Rules for going to Sea with the Captain very clear at the start. 1. The Captain employs certain things , like his cutlass ( I display) which be dangerous for others. Don't be touching the Seadawgs Stuff. 2. If any of ye have seen my show, or be knowin' how a trick maybe done, I shall be free to diwcuss it after the show. Anyone spoilin the magic for anyone else walks the plank. 3. When the Seadawg does something amazing, which he often does, it be wise for you to clap like this ( Demo) ..... Now you give it a try.... Great now on with the Show me Hearties.... Ye be wantin to see the show? Aye....(cue for clap and off we go)...

You actually also in return gave me a very funny idea based upon the large bottle of sanitizer. hehehe This could actually be quite a funny prop you could build with a lot of comedy by play. Instead of posting it here and going off topic a bit, let me see if I can start a new thread on the idea. Hope folks like it and can use it. Kyle

I do not produce sponge balls, or anything else for that matter from my mouth during my show. After shaking spectators hands, handling live rabbits, etc. I feel it is best not to place anything in my mouth. I do carry a bottle of Germ X Hand Sanitizer with me all the time. I keep it readily available on stage, but I try not to use it during the show.

I just got this funny image of a magician pulling out the hand sanitizer after every trick involving a spectator. That would look good

Come to think of it---you may be using something a bit caustic to clean your face. You've lost all that skin pink texture. Richard. |

Herd of an incident where a magician after producing 4 spong balls from his mouth got a kid up to help. Woofdy.... I can't even begin...wow. I do not consider myself a germ freak by any stretch of the imagination. My comments are also driven more by my experience as a parent than as a performer. That being said, I sanitize EVERYTHING before and after each show including myself. All wands, props, widgets, and sundries, are all given a good once over with clorox wipes. I get a very sexy brand of hand sanitizer from the uniform shop I frequent for my performing pants it is the stuff that nurses who shop there buy all the time. They turned me on to it while shopping. (Off topic tip: doctors pants come in all colors under the rainbow and are cooler than shorts in the summer time. yank out the drawstring and sew on suspender buttons and you have very cool and fairly snazzy looking pants) For older kids age 8 and up I do the card from mouth. I bill it as the worlds most disgusting card trick. When the card it taken from my mouth I attempt to give it to the kid as a gag and while getting the laugh I throw the cards in the trash section of my performing case and sanitize my hands while getting the next prop. A a parent I know kids get sick a lot. Young kids get REALLY sick. I do not want to do anything to contribute to that. On the flip side of the story is the kids making the performer sick. I have been flat on my back for the past few days with the most horrible chest ailment I have had in years. I know exactly when I got it too... I was doing a gig for a big group of special needs kids and one of the kids who sounded like he was smuggling whistles in his larynx coughed right in my face as he was telling me a story. It was gross, but I didn't flinch. I kept the smile on my face as his goober ran down my nose. His horrified mom rescued me and apologized. I went into the mens room and washed up but I knew I was going to get sick...and I did. Why do parents take really sick kids to parties where they can make every other kid there sick? Not to mention the entertainer. I've only had to pass off one gig because of it (because I am not going to work a kid show with something catchy) but geez-Louise people really need to get a grip on reality. Sorry to vent, it must be all the codeine in the cough syrup. At least the antibiotics have kicked in and I feel a little better. Since we are talking about sponge balls from mouth. I currently do sponge snack from Mr Abbott wonderful DVD. I have been thinking after producing a few to produce a few of different colors, but I still need to find a way of doing the load. I am pretty sure this has been done before and I was wondering if anyone can share their ideas on this, or point me in the right direction.
Thanks |

Carlos,
One solution after several reds... When you go to "burp" again, use a "double load", second ball being stored lower in your pocket then the first. After this burp of a double red, now start producing multiples of this colour. But you may want to start of with another colour first if you are finishing with the big load. Since you may have multiple colour changes. Here is some foood for thought... "do you thnk that a colour change in the middle will enhance the effect since you start red and finish with a large red?" Perhaps Bill Abbot would like to weigh in on this...
