I was just told that I can't use fire in my fire cage. I normally open the show by doing manipulations with fire, then setting the cage on fire and producing my assistant. Does anyone have any ideas that would allow me to do some interesting magic and then tie it in to producing the girl? I was thinking along the lines of a dancing hank that flies into the cage and then I transform it into the girl with the hank. Any other ideas?

How about a small doll dressed like your assistant?

I thought Bill Blagg does that. . .

He does, but another client of mine does that as well and came up with it independently of Bill. I don't believe using "look alike" dolls in an effect is something new.

Why were you told you cannot use fire? Maybe you just need a pyro license?

How about turning a candle into a feather and in turn turning it into your assistant!

Thanks for the ideas. The facility has a strict no fire policy. You do not need a pyro license. It's called an open flame permit, and is easy to get. I can use a candle, but it would be without a flame (no fire). I would say that turning a doll into a person is public domain since I've seen hundreds of magicians do it in the doll house for decades.

Greetings,
I ran into the same problem not too long ago. My management contacted the fire department and after clarifying things, we got a permit, even against the facilities wishes. The client wanted the fire, so they bit their tongue and allowed it..... Good luck

Playing with fire .. always a fun time.
First of all .. a pyro license isn't simple to get. It took me over two years to get everything in order, working with the FBI and the ATF. That includes a background search, inspections, testing .. and on and on. After the Rhode Island accident and September 11th they have clamped down tight on all explosive materials. I went through a lot of expense to get the proper licensing. Curtis .. are you out of your mind?? You never go against the facilities policy .. it's their building. If a theater manager says no .. that means no .. It's that simple. Steve |

Chezaday,
I agree, but the client kept pushing for it, and she contacted the fire department, twisted the hotels arm etc, etc, and then my management took care of it. We had the fire marshal there as well... I even told the client we would use different effects. But the client wanted all the special effects and stunts she has seen prior.

Brainstorming:-
Do something with a hat. Put the hat in the cage and she appears wearing it. A similar idea could be done with any clothing that she appears wearing. Dress, feather boa, Shoes? Playing cards and she appears in a dress covered with playing cards. Sponge balls and she appears dressed as a giant sponge ball-maybe not. Rose and she appears in a red dress with the rose between her teeth. Phil |

Solcalmagic:
You can buy a small pot with a fan that blows a red and yellow silk up - it's not fire but it looks pretty darn good. The one's I've seen are 120 volt, but if you could get a small battery powered unit, I think you could make a convincing display of something burning. Jim |

Thanks for all the ideas.
Chezaday, I did not say a pyro license is easy to get. I said an open flame permit is easy to get (non-explosive fire onstage such as a candle flame or gas created flame). jimhlou I've also thought about the flame illusion sold by several dj lighting companies, but did not want to cut up my fire cage to make it work for the rare facility that does not allow fire. |

This is an old post but why don't you use a mini fog machine inside to create the idea of fire ...you could also light it with red rights to help ....

I use one without fire and do something very similar to what Cardone mentioned.
I have a huge video screen with flames and use a smoke machine. |

What about doing something with roses, then you can incorporate that into producing a girl, giving her a rose.

The illusion can still be very striking without the fire:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUuo3SdBSVY We have to remind ourselves that the audience isn't sitting there thinking, "Wow, this would have been sooo much more convincing if he had lit the inside on fire 1st". |
