Magicbob116,
If you have made a previous purchase from Penguin Magic, they give you a code to get 10% off the next purchase. Your first purchase would be at the listed price. However, I initially interpreted your comment about the book that was for sale on Amazon as just Vol 3 for $50. Rereading it, I see that you referred to the compilation of the 3 volumes. Checking on Amazon, I confirmed that they are selling the New Enc. of Rope Tricks at essentially the same price as Penguin Magic (unless you get their 10% discount). My mistake! For what it is worth, Penguin Magic is currently running a special on some type of ITR for purchases over $30. The deal is you get the ITR for free. John

Thank you very much to everybody giving information about Old and New Enc. of Rope Tricks.
I had mixed up the titles. I will certainly look for a copy of this big Encyclopedia. Trolle |

Jim Gerrish has finally published his one rope body penetration (combined with a silk through body penetration) called "Passing Through" in The Wizards' Journal #11, but he doesn't want anyone to buy it. He wanted to take the secret to his grave, but I twisted his arm and it is now available on my site. He warns that his public description contains deceptive advertising and outright lies. He really doesn't want anyone to buy it and will be very happy if you just pass this one up, but I thought you should know it's out there anyway. In my humble opinion, it's a shifting paradigm for rope magic, but what do I know? I'll hide the notice in this thread and maybe Jim won't see it.

Well, what do you think? Did the advertising lead you astray? Be honest! I can take it!

I guess Jim one out, I don't see #11 on your site. I was curious about since ever since you mentioned in this past year.

It's there but tricky. Jim has made it difficult to find. It's part of his strategy so no one will buy the instructions. From front page, click on Wizards' Journal #11 in Progress. After that you're on your own. It's like taking a journey through the forbidden forest.

Just to resurrect this thread ...
I've been fooling around with my new Tarbell gimmicks and can do the effect as originally referred to (the one on MVD and also on youtube). I think this is the same as Hang em High but I don't have the DVD for that so am not completely sure. The good thing about the gimmick is that it's quite robust and so the rope can be given a good tug by the spectators beforehand. But of course, it can't be tugged afterwards, which is a small weakness in the set-up and leaves you with some cleaning up to do. To get round this I also experimented with using two sets of gimmicks. This allows the rope spectators to actually pull the rope through you and keep pulling afterwards. This works in theory but I have found it too fiddly to do smoothly in practice (although may get better with more practice). I still feel that the screw-type gimmicks could be improved and that there must be some kind of subminiature electrical connector out there - or something used for plumbing or medical fluids - which would lock together simply and quickly with a bayonet or push-fit fitting and which would be strong enough to withstand pulling. If I ever discover it I'll let everyone know! Also, I know other people have used the idea of attaching boxer shorts for comedy. I was wondering about a more gruesome presentation, where the rope gets stuck in the middle of the body, there is some "blood", and it emerges with a spleen or some other internal organ attached!

Actually...
You can show the rope afterwards with Hang 'em High. He does mention it, and it's the same idea you have with two gimmicks. He doesn't do it that way though, and neither do I. I still recommend the video. You can't beat the comedy of Bob Sheets. Plus, he shows other tricks too. Any way... the real reason I wrote this. My friend does this trick, but he uses a stick and fish tank tubing. They create a suction that holds very strong. Just a thought. Randi |

Thanks for that, very interesting idea. Although I don't understand the mechanics exactly. I can see that if you inserted a stick into a tube and then sealed off the other end, it would be hard to remove the stick. And if you unsealed the end, it would be easy. But what if the spectator is holding the other end of the tube/rope? Seems to me you need some way to release the pressure covertly yourself. Perhaps a small slit in the tube which you squeeze? This calls for some experimentation.

Lots of useable versions in the Encyclopedia. Daryl's DVD set has several using the grandmother's necklace principle (two ropes). I saw Paul Daniels do this recently and if it's good enough for him ... If you want a one rope version, you can probably figure it out for yourself but the Hang Em High DVD has some nice subtleties. Search this topic for more information.
