Hello dove experts,
As I was backstage preparing to perform, I put my dove in the harness and I placed him in my inside jacket dove holder and it gave way and fell on the floor. I didn't have the holder secure enough. When I returned home I took him out of the carrying cage and I noticed that he just sat in one spot with his eyes closed. I know something is wrong and I'm worried because he's not cooing. He flew twice from perch to perch and he made that laughing noise but then he immediately went back to that sleeping state. I looked closely and his top beak is tilted a little to the right. This morning he was still in that sleeping state. I took him out of the cage and he opened his eyes, flew from hand to hand, made that laughing noise and on my finger he went into that breathing sleeping state. The fact that he's making that laughing sound makes me feel like it's not serious, but he's not cooing and he always coos. Something is wrong! I'm not a dove professional. I had my dove for about two years and he's never done this before. I know it's from the result of the fall. What should I do? |

Normally, I can help with most dove questions however, I'm not a vet so medical advice is usually just from what I've learned. It sounds like when your dove fell, it landed on it's head or beak which is why the beak is out of line. The sleeping might just be from the trauma. The important thing is to make sure it can eat. An improperly aligned beak can be a problem.
If I were you, I'd find an avian vet and have him checked out. They may be able to reset the beak. The sleeping is most likely it's way of knowing it's got a problem and it's trying to remedy itself.

Hi Ragidy,
I'm no expert I am afraid, much like yourself I have only kept doves for a few years. Although I have never dropped a Dove, one of mine was attacked by a giant white rabbit about 2 years ago. It was badly beaten, cut, bruised and the rabbit had chewed the ends of its wings and elbows (if doves have elbows, but you know what I mean?) At the time he spent a couple of days in this sleep state, I just kept him warm, and made sure that there was food and water available. I also bought my other bird in too, so that he had company, and I noted that for a day or so the healthy bird, kind of kept watch over the sick bird, and fed him a little too. I would agree with Dave however, get him to a vet. At least even if he says that he will be fine in a day or so, it is peace of mind. Hope he gets well soon. My thoughts are with you both. Liam

I know this post started a few days ago. But what Dave said is true it might be his beak is out of line. Make sure he is able to eat and get him to a vet.
Hope things are ok. Vonbodan |
