Based on an old brain teaser involving wine and water, this card trick was suggested by Martin Gardner (based on mathematician David Gale's "non-messing-up theorem") in several of his published works, including "Aha!," "Gardner's Workout," "The Last Recreations," and "Martin Gardner in the Twenty-First Century."
