Greetings everyone.
Hope you all had a great Holiday season. I am wondering if any of you know of any information about Doug Hennings Mousetrap illusion. It was a huge illusion and I think when he did it on TV he did it with Bill Cosby. I know that William Kennedy has the exclusive rights to building it - but what I am looking for is a picture of it. Does any one know of pictures, websites, or links regarding this illusion? Would be much appreciated. Duckster |

There is an Italian magician around ( whose name escapes me) who does a similar effect to this.
You can find his site listed in Yahoo. Erix Logan if I am not mistaken - wait a mo... http://www.erixlogan.com/html/backstage.html That should be it! |

Hi Duckster:
There is a small photo of the illusion that you are talking about in the May 1980 issue of Genii magazine. It was taken from Doug's fifth TV special broadcast from Las Vegas. |

I really liked the concept for this illusion. It builds up anticipation for what is in the end just a transposition. Good idea on presentation.
I'm sure kids really dig into this illusion. A little off topic but appropriate here. Doug's passing was a great loss.

Thanks for the information - that picture from Genii magizine - I don't have access to it - does anyone know where I could find a picture of it on the web.
The italian guy has an interesting version of it. I admire that fact that it is somewhat different in look from Henning original - but the performance sounds exactly the same. He did however spend quite a bit of money on it because the colors are full and vibrant. I have heard that Lance Burton is doing a version of this illusion as well - does any one know where I can see a picture of that one? Thanks! Duckster |

Duckster,
Presto, it's magic. I have a scan from a Henning show program book of the Mousetrap illusion. Do you have an email address? Also, if anyone else would like one, PM me with your email address, and I'll send you one. |

Thank you in advance. |

You can see the whole illusion performed and most likely get screen captures (if you have a DVD drive on your PC) by purchasing "The Magic Show" DVD. I got mine off of Amazon. It is a reworking for Canadian TV of Henning's Broadway production of the same name.

If you can locate the June 2001 edition of MAGIC magazine, there is a picture of Lance's Mousetrap illusion in there. He states that it is based on the routine by Doug Henning.

What is the effect? I think I missed Henning by a couple of years.
Thanks Lee |

How long will be before Copperfield "improves" on this effect?

You say "improve on" the effect (David already does many tranpositions in his show) or do you mean change the presentation?? David does not seem to be into the whimsical comedy this illusion/presentation allows for. Any significant change would, I believe, change the desired effect on the audience that the use of this prop tries to evoke.
Question for Duckster: Was this idea not given in an old Linking Ring magazine? I believe Doug dealt with the "creator" and modified the presentation somewhat for his show, but did not change the effect. This relates to Kennedy having "exclusive" building rights. I saw Doug perform this effect live here in Montreal on one of his tours. Filled the stage and just the sight of the prop got a chuckle from the audience. Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

I talked with Kennedy about 10 years ago and he told me that Doug had sent him a great letter issuing Kennedy exclusive building rights.
I really appreciate the tip on "the magic show" on DVD. I will check into that. I just like the concept of this illusion, not because of the magic, but the set up. It is kind of like Pee Wee Herman's Breakfast Machine in his first movie. I have always loved that kind of mechanics. I have respect for Copperfield but would much rather see Lance Burton's version of this illusion than Copperfield's. |

It was interesting to see how Doug mounted the "contraption" on a stage with no traps. He also eliminated the boxy base that the unit sat on on his t.v. special. (Think giant drum illusion bases in a row.)
