Well put, Espmagic. Nicely defined. But not all propless enthusiast are elitists. I like 'propless' but not because I have an elitist mindset. It's just being practical. I work at about 18 inches from my spectator/s, so I have to be careful,
particularly at the start. I see lots of close up prop stuff where the nearest person is 8 feet away. I wouldn't feel comfortable using it at 18 inches. Somebody wrote about Ted Karmilovich doing about 45 minutes of propless stuff at a PEA convention. Now there is a standard to aim at. |

Hi All:
A very wise man who knows mentalism inside and out said once this: "If you PICK UP a prop, your fee GOES DOWN!" In my humble opinion natural props, like a wallet and a purse, are allowed in a mindreading act or where you should keep your envelopes, billets or visiting cards in? Ted Karmilovich used in the above mentioned show, as far as I know, a book for a book test only, but the funniest act he ever did was his "MICKY MAVEN" Act. Everytime I think of it, I chuckle. It was hilarious!!! ESPecially TED

I think you miss teds point. A blackboard is one thing. A new box with ornate symbols is another.
In the end aren't our effects supposed to elicit emotions, tell a story, demonstrate an amazing feat, and involve our audiences? Mixing all of this will work wonders.
I love magic!

Should we be trying to convince our audience that we can really read minds, predict the future, etc., or to entertain them as best we can? Perhaps we can do both, depending on our own personality. Has there ever been a "name" mentalist that never used a prop of any kind? As suggested earlier if the "prop" is an every day item (pencil, paper, money, etc.) it is really not a questionable prop is it? Regardless of how we do it, what we use, or what we do, the entertainment value will always depend on PRESENTATION.

Surely 'Propless Mentalism' is just magic speak for 'seemingly propless'?
As in 'Just let me give them (stacked deck) a quick shuffle to mix them up' Just a thought TJ |

Propless mentalism, such as Naked on a Beach, is a routine (Or routines) not using THEATRICL PROPERTIES.....It does not mean that you can't use things that are in the normal environment that surrounds you. A bent coin in your pocket is a Theatrical Prop, but some change in your son's piggy bank is not( As long as you are at home )
Get it? Nothing that can't really be set up durring or just seconds before the performance. TRUE IMPROMPTU! That's my position FWIW

Malchat is bang on! We look at an act and try to de-construct it so we can figure out why he/she is a success. We try to define it,you can define a personal artistic expression. There are no rules,no limits,no correct way,no wrong way.To define a winning artistic formula is not the right way to go in my opinion. We all learn, grow and develop through experience and repetition.Everyone takes different paths..God I hope I'm a better performer in ten years time than I am now..

Pete and malchat - that's the most interesting point I have read on the Café in months.
There is no cookie cutter formulae for performance excellence - we all bring it in out own way. Of course I'm interested by the likes of Derren, but his stuff would not suit my style per se. I also love some of John archers routines, but they do not suit me presented as he does. We all have to bring something new, and seek inspiration. Carey's new movie 23, Lost, Heroes, and the odd documentary. works for me. |

I did an hour set last week, my usual act. At the end, a guy from somewhere in the south of ireland came up to me and said "look I know this isn't really your thing and you're not a magician, but I can do this thing with rubber bands......"

Simon, You sound like an ambitious person and that is a big plus. I didn't see where you mention Corinda's 13 Steps. If you have not read it than you are still in infancy in mentalism. If you have read it then it should have answered all of your questions. Do not rely on other performers. Everyone else, for all you know, with some obvious exceptions, are probably no wiser than you. You want to be a mentalist. A mentalist means that you are a thinker. Then the best advice that I can offer after 66 years in magic/mentalism is to think for yourself. You can then have the satisfaction of saying that you did it "your way".
