I thought I would share this interesting bit that I learned today after being at church (hey everybody's welcomed there! )...
My grandma passed away last sunday night, so we had the funeral on monday, anyways, to make a story short, the women stays next to the body, the men stays in another place, I thought that was a bit sexist and retarded (no offence to anyone) since I am catholic by birth! I was having this talk with an old guy sitting right next to me (NOT PULLING ANYBODY'S LEG) and I mentioned this subject, so he simply told me that : the reason why the women stays next to the body is that when a person dies, his soul floats AROUND his body, it doesn't pass right away to the other side, the soul sees and hears everything, women weep and cry, the soul needs to realize that he/she is dead.... then when it's burried, the soul stays next to its burrial place for 40 days, that's why after 40 days of the burrial we have a mass/visit the graves and burn incense and say the prayer's dead. because it is beleive that on the 40th day TWO major spirits slide from the other world to this one to take the dead soul's person to the "other" place. now the reason for all the prayers and visits is that the soul realises it is dead and doesn't wonder off without being in the other world. after the 40th day and the soul leaving to the other world, they start to teach it how to talk, eat, walk move around, it's totally different from our world, it's more pure, and "high" -dunno how to translate the meaning of this in english soz guys!- after three months, the soul is sent back to earth to give it the freedom of choosing if he/she wants to stay on earth or go to the other realm, most of the souls decide to go back up because everything is totally different here, not so pure not so "high" I was hypnotised by the way he was speaking, after he finished he told me that he's always around the cathedral here and if I feel like visiting an old man from time to time just to drop by!! I hope I didn't bore you guys with my incident, but it meant a lot to me in a way that someone finally gave me an explanation to some of the rituals that I've been raised to! and will definitely pay him a visit ASAP

That's great. Wonderful story, and a wise old guy sitting alone--like out of a movie! I'm sure you'll treasure the experience.

Terrific, pkg! I think you will learn much of value from the old man. Visit him often! There is wisdom to be found everywhere.

I seriously am gonna ask a priest about the rituals, the why, where from, who....cuz the chants (the tune) are kinda weird and eerie...the whole concept is just "new" to me (new as in I never gave it much thought, it only started a couple of days ago!)

There seems to be a relation between this view of death and the Tibetan one as described in the Tibetan Book of the Dead, where the departed soul also needs guidance from the living, infact quite explicit directions are given, I believe the period of the souls attachment to the earthly realm is similar too (sorry I don't have the book to hand, lent it to some one)...

Such a thought sits at the base of ALL so called primitive mind thought--vodu, hindu, buddha, etc.....it was a natural line of thought in the sense that 'death' did not exist..only transformation....look at the leaves now fallen and dead, but lo! the next cycle births new leaves...so it was they thought of our own tree of life....
its all NONSENSE--that is, its ABOVE AND BEYOND THE FIVE WRETCHED AND LIMITED SENSES... |
