Well after a long brainstorming session and one annoyed waitress later, (we only had drinks in 3 hours) my bud and I have decided on a dueling magician show. We plan to incorporate many forms of magic. Illusions, animals, and lots of comedy.

About us: He is suave, naturally smooth, he is no Pollock but that is who he emulates. Is a very good technical magician and portrays sophistication. He is short and in good shape

Me well, I am chubby and not only do I look like curly from the 3 stooges I perform like him. I love comedy, I live for puns! Carrot top is one of my favorite performers! (stop groaning he is great). I often find myself in bumbling magician situations.

We have the exact opposite style and we play well together on stage. Think if you put Lance Burton in a show with amazing Jonathon. Lance does lots of great magic while Jonathon does some also but picks on lance a lot until lance has the final revenge by completely fooling everyone including Jonathon. This is our show! He truly is annoyed with my goofyness, and I do honestly dig at him to get under his skin. I am sure over the years this has been done before; However I have not seen any shows like this in person.

So the question is, does anyone know of any shows or teams I could research for inspiration or any published material out there on pursuing this type of show?

Thanks again Café' members.

Penn & Teller?

I think there's even a husband and wife show in Vegas (Drew and Angela I believe...).

My friend and I started working on a similar idea... run with it and have fun!!!

Sounds refreshing. Make it become a reality. In Dick Foster's original Spellbound in Philadelphia in the mid 80's, the Pendragons were the good guys and Carlton and Company were the bad guys. Each played off each other until the final curtain. The concept was based on opposite forces working together, but in total opposition to each other. Needless to say, it bcame a hugh hit. PM me should you have any specific questions.
Best regards,
Bill Thomas

Watching Laurel and Hardy might give you a feel for the characters and clashes you are looking for - though not the magic.

Other than Carrot Top as performance role model, it sounds like it has a lot of potential. Much relies on your combined abilities to build your character while developing an endearment with the audience. It sounds like you have a head start in the contrasting chemistries between you and your friend, and if you can establish that synergy on stage with the audience, you’ve got a possible winner. If you’re the only one’s having fun, then take a look in the mirror first.

Count me in as I’d like to see it. Good luck!
Dan.

You could do some tricks where he succeeds - and when you fail - you still fail magically - he gets a sponge something to expand enormously - when you try to do it - it diminishes in size.

He puts money in his wallet - when he shows it again it's increased in value - you try the same thing - full of confidence - but yours decreases in value to a coin.

It's good if there's still magic in your failure - soon gets boring if it's just - his tricks work - yours don't.

Wasn't there a (spoof) Doug Henning vs. (the real) Harry Anderson on one of the late night talk shows, at one time? Dueling magicians style.

If I remember correctly, Tim Kole and Mark Kalin also pulled this off in one of the Spellbound productions in Vegas.
