The movie is very good. A little dark but I think that's what makes it better. I think even if we take the magic out of it there are a lot of sub plots and conflicts. (external, magicans vs. each other/ the world. internal, the magicans struggle with himself) and varios other one's as well that a good movie should have . Historcially I think it player true to form because I love card magic and when I didn't see any in their I was a bit dissapointed, but remembering that it was taking place around the turn of the century I realized why. I don't like movies just like that but for some reason and I hope nobody says anything about this I think it is one of the best movie's for magic ever made.
PS. Both Wolverine and Batman did a good job |

Loved the book
Really disliked the movie (think the book's storyline should have been kept to...) |

I honestly felt that the film out did the book.
I liked the books little tag on ending, that was just plain creepy. Don't think a book has ever made me jump before. However, I much prefered most of what they did in the film, for a film that is. It just played so well.

A little off topic here but, is the Illusionist also available in a book?

Yep. I have a copy of it right here on my desk. It's called, "The Barnum Museum" and it is a book of short stories...

Movie was amazing, so many little things in there that a second viewing is a must. Though I can only assume that we will have to wait for some "SPECIAL EDITION, DIRECTOR'S CUT" DVD to come out to truely understand every little detail. But I believe that how Nolan makes his films, he wants us all to be asking the questions when we are done, this is a mark of a great director. Will read the book this week and see how it compares.

I would love to see that. However, so far, Nolan (the director) has not released any extended cuts of his films, I believe.
Special editiona, yes, but director's cuts, no, as he seems to feel that what makes it to the big screen IS his cut. He seems pretty good at making a film that does not have to be comprimised via producers etc . . .

Perhaps an elaboration?
WHY did you not like it?

Expanding per request: I was hoping for something that was not as violent and more realistic. Perhaps part of my displeasure was taking my teenage son with me. If I had known it was so violent and sick in parts, I would not have taken him. Many of you adults will find it interesting because the plot is a real twist...just don't make the same mistake I did and take your children. I feel it should have been rated R..not PG13. Perhaps I am old-fashioned but I do want to protect my son from such brutality in movies and I did not know this had so much of it. I was hoping for an interesting "magic" movie but in my opinion, I got a "horror" flick. I do not belittle any of you that enjoyed the movie...it just wasn't for me.
Thanks for accepting my point of view as I have yours. Respectfully submitted as requested, Keith

I did enjoy the movie but I also had no pretention that the movie was going to be overly "magical". I don't mean to speak for you but if the movie wasnt what you expected, was it because you were expecting different than magic being a sub plot? I am sorry about the fact that your son was subject to the violence. That point is something I take in to concern being as I have to children as well. |

I can completely understand your views there.
I honestly didn't find it THAT horrific, especially for a teenager. When I was a teenager, all of five years ago and more, teenagers were all going to see Scream, and Fight Club, at ages from 14-17. Compared to thos films, this one was pretty mild for graphic content. However it certainly was a DARK film. Hopefully you may beable to re-watch it someday going in with a better idea of what it is, IF that kind of film is in any of your cups of tea that is But in the end, I cannot argue with you at all on your reasonings for not enjoying it. Althoug, now I'm curious, what did your son think?

I personally thought the darkness of the film was evident in the trailer mind you. I in know way mean anything towards you Kieth.
I was just thinking back to see if I recalled the trailers making it feel somewhat different is all, but I recall them indicating a pretty dark film. Again, nothing directed at you here, I just have a bit of a peeve with trailers that do misrepresent a film. Really ruins the experience when you go in expecting one film, but get another, as you yourself experienced with this one.

Danton was killing himself every time he performed that, because when he shot himself it was the danton that remained in the tesla that picked up the gun and shot his double. Yet when he performed it, it was his double that appeared on the belcony and the original dantont hat dropped under the stage and drowned. unless he made a double of himself before the show, caused his double to do the entire show and theredfore the orginal danton would have been the one who appeared int he belcony.
I hope that made sence. also at the very end when we are seen a close up of one of the tanks with danton (perhaps a double) inside, is that to make us think tht maybe it was a double that was shot by Albert. and the original danton was holding his breath in the tank....hence making us believe that indeed they both survived using doubles.
Its not what you do, but how you do it.

Then he would be making another double during the performance. Why not just make a double, and then use him all the time instead of kiling a new one everytime.
At the end, I believe it is ment to be just ONE of the hundred Dantons that were in all of the tanks. It was just ment to hammer home that he had tokill one every show. Obviously he could not stand to live with a constant double of himself and instead thought it would be easier to kill himself 100 times. Go figure. Guess the guy he used from the streets really soured his view on a constand stand in. You'ld think he could trust himself.

To start, he was a noble, gentry. There would be LOTS of consequences if a double decided to go off on his own.
As to which is which... not really the case. As put by Tesla, "they are all your hat". What made the killings conscionable was the belief that drowning was a pleasant experience. IMHO the notion of "not knowing which" was self deception UNLIKE the question of the knot. There would always be BOTH in the former and obviously the latter was not willing to tell as he was both guilty and ashamed of the event.
