For those out there who are considering memorizing a stack I have 2 pieces of advice for you.
1) Do it! Enough said! (The rewards will be WELL WORTH your effort, actually won't even begin to compare. Search Aronson's material!) 2) Consider making your own stack. There are many great stacks out there, for example I use and love the Aronson Stack. But just don't think there are only 2 or 3 good stacks. What I am saying is if you have several tricks you do that rely on a non-memorized stack, such as Play It Straight (Bannon), Change of Mind (Ackerman) or anything that uses a full or partial non-mem stack, consider arranging your deck in preparation to do these tricks (or whatever you do) and do 6 or 7 faros, which will position the deck only a faro or two from getting into not only your stack but a mem stack that also doubles for the other tricks. For those that don't know 8 perfect faros put the cards in their original order. Also, there is a routine Alan Ackerman does called "Ackerman's Opener" that is killer! The ending is in my opinion one of the best finales EVER and it is possible becasue of a SPECIFIC stack he uses, called a tetradistic stack, meaning there are 4 cycles or 13 cards...so cards 1,14,27,and 40 are the same, suits don't matter, etc, Look up the routine. It is on his DVDs (not the technique DVDs) and in his book Las Vegas Kardma. Narlo |

Awesome idea. I attended a Darwin Ortiz lecture last month at Denny & Lee's Magic Studio, and he also promoted just doing it (even with your own stack), instead of waiting for the "perfect" stack. As a result, I'll begin memorizing my own stack soon -- after my show this Saturday, when I can relax.
I was planning on just shuffling for a while, and then calling the result my stack. But your idea about a setup and six or seven faros is excellent. I think I'll combine the two ideas. I also like the idea others have mentioned about numbering the backs on your learning deck, so you can shuffle-up and name number-for-value or value-for-number while memorizing. Thanks for the idea. |
