Some of my favorites are Hoy's Ulitmate Book Test, anyhing by Larry Becker, and lots of Jack Dean.

My favorite is one that I came up with using Jack Dean's Spending Spree. Using the same method, I adapted it to what I call "Dream Date". It has everything in the routine. Mystery, plenty of comedy, very commercial, and a magician fooler. Instead of doing a shopping spree, its a dream date with a beautiful model. Spectator chooses the girl from several 8x10 laminated pics. Then free choice from several pamplets the destination (Hawaii, Europe, Asia etc), and then how much money he takes with him on this dream date. After the routine they leave the stage with a Barbie like doll, toy plane and fake money. The audience loves this routine.

I think you nailed it as to what happened: folks didn't read the instructions. Also, the ad and booklet cover said "self working". That may be true (I don't think so), but folks interpreted self working as, it could be done with no effort. Well...it does take effort and practice. Just like IT does. What got me interested in Killer Red Caps was a post Bob Kohler made about it (http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=109). I also did some research and found a lot of Pro's thought quite highly of the effect. How could this be? Magicians everywhere said it was horrible. Bob Kohler had it on sale, so I took a gamble. I'm glad I did. It's one of the cleverest mentalist tools I've found. With Roger Monaco's “Cold Reading Caps”, the caps are just a small part of the effect. They're like a TT. Just a tool to facilitate the effect. I think anyone that has this in their drawer should read Bob's thoughts in the Café, and then go through the instructions. If someone has never done mentalism, then it may not appeal to them. Someone that has, I believe they will see the gold in it. I don't know Bob Kohler or Roger Monaco. I get nothing form anyone performing it. Actually, I'd rather no one performed this where I live (just like IT or anything that I love doing). Chris

I have to say Chris, it's rare that you discuss any item that you don't think is great.
The one post I saw of your's where you stated "Don't buy this!" I went ahead and bought the item. It was not a wise choice. |

I'm just curious Killer Red Caps takes work and the worker needs to adjust for lighting conditions, etc. With the routining in the Monaco effect, the caps look to be a small part of it (and they are). How I'm doing it is using two objects. One is mine, the other is theirs. (Their ring would be best). I turn my back and they place one of the objects under one of the 5 caps and the other goes hidden in their hand. When I turn around, I'll know which one is under the cap, which means I'll know which one is hidden in their hand. Imagine doing a cold reading for someone and then being able to tell them which object is in their hand and then lift the cap that has the other object hidden under it? I think that's a killer effect. Best, Chris

I have had a friend perform a "psychophysiological" (that's muscle reading to the rest of us) thought reading on me. Was very impressed. Got Banachek's dvd on the subject in order to learn how to do it.
Another impressive routine done by an older gentleman at the Columbus Magi-Fest a couple of years ago was equally impressive. He handed out a variety of articles from a magazine to the audience. Each person gave him the page number of the article and he could tell you the exact name of the article and quote a few lines from each.

I just recently saw Derren's Confabulation routine with the blind man. A prediction for a confabulation in braille?? My eyes just popped out of my sockets! And it was touching as well. As for his closer from Something Wicked, I must have seen it around 6 times now (the same performance on video) and it still fries me!
