Mickey Mouse, in addition to being copyrighted, is also trademarked and trademark laws are far more stringent than copyright and a trademark can be renewed over and over and they are protected such that trademark infringement was a criminal offense long before the beginning of making copyright infringement in certain cases criminally punishable. I am not a fan of Disney's business practices, but, other trademarks as well will never fall into the public domain either and this was before Disney's efforts in the legislature. The Beatles, Coca-Cola, and Pepsi, to name a few are trademarked names and designs.
