Hi all
I wonder if someone would be kind enough recommend a version of the needle through arm trick. I know there are several versions out there and would like to see which one people recommend. Also, is the gimmick the same for all. Or do different versions use different methods? I have the Dave Powell one myself. So I already know the gimmick for that one. If any others have different gimmicks I would be interested in buying them. But I don't just want to buy one at random just to discover that it is the same gimmick as the one I have. NOT asking you to actually reveal the gimmick BTW! Thanks in advance Duncan

Try Harry Anderson's method; it's a really cool effect! It works well for stage, not a close-up effect at all. It's a great comedy routine, though.

If you are looking for a close-up effect, get Andrew Mayne's Shock-FX video. He has the paperclip through arm on there. There are also quite a few other effects on there you would like. Namely, the pencil through cheek. Great effects, I highly recommend the video.
Coming soon... Who knows!

Harry Anderson's is great -Josh
If a magician is not intending to "trick" a spectator, why is every "trick" called a magic "trick"?

I have used two different makes.
The most recent is the Harry Anderson. It is the bomb. Gosh I sound silly using that word, but it is. His instructions are the best and his needle is truly fine craftmanship. Picked ours up through Hocus Pocus. Sillily, Will

Hi all
Thanks for your input on this. As far as I know, the Anderson version and the Dave Powell are essentally the same. The Dave Powell is well made, but I have found the the gaff does not work very well on me. I have pretty tight skin on my arms and not too much fat there to grab. Everything just comes apart in a few seconds! When my version finally bends or breaks I will have to by the Anderson one. I keep hearing such good things about it. Though I keep hearing rumours that the one he sells is NOT the one he performs. It certainly doesn't look like he is using the method he sells on the video I have of him performing it. Scheda, I have Andrew Mayne's book, shock magic. Personally I thought it was a little light on content and it seemed to cover a lot of old ground. Very little seemed to be of his own creation. However the vid does sound good and it might find its way to my collection at some point Have fun Duncan

All the "gimmicked" versions are the same --the only difference is quality of the bulb.
Years ago there was a model under the name "Gem" I think, and when I was a dealer that was the best I saw come through. Better than at least the old Anderson model. Matt |

Duncan,
Anderson use a little trick photography on his "Hello Sucker" show. He had the footage of him pulling the needle out played in reverse so it appears that he sticks the needle in his arm. That was for video reasons and I don't disagree with his decision. I have the old GEM Model one as well. It is nice but I think I like the new Anderson version we just bought better. Thars my cents Will

I would have no trouble in believing the new Anderson version is better than the older version. I like Harry Anderson a lot and I'd forgotten about the "Hello Sucker" video bit.

I don't think Gem is around anymore. I paid twenty some odd for mine. That was twenty some odd years ago.
It still works alright. As long as I don't blow the seam. Sillily, WIll

From what I gather reading on this and other posts, having a lot of loose skin on the forearm is necessary for the Needle in the Arm. I'm considering buying one, but am I going to be dissapointed when it doesn't work? I'd love to add this to my act, but would rather not be stuck with something sitting on the shelf.
And yes, Harry used trick photography in his special. I loved his explanation --"Look at the title of the show!" |

Hey, just so everyone knows, I started a thread on needle through arm in the bizarre section. There's some cool stuff there and it's still on the first page --I'm pretty sure-- as of this posting.

Adrew Mayne's video Shock magic is THE Worst video I have ever seen. (Yes, even Gangs of New York was better).
Seriously, I think anyone who buys Shock FX is wasting his money. The only good thing in the video was that one new tip for needle through arm. That's it! He could've posted that on this message board. I felt so ripped off, but I really liked his shock magic booklet. P.S. Anderson's Needle is ok for close up. I have tried it. |

Hi all
Thanks to everyone for all the help offered. Sorry I did not reply sooner, I have been so busy recently. Thanks for the heads up on the Andrew mayne vid Pekka. I must admit I was not to impressed with the shock magic book. I get the feeling I could have written a better one myself. In fact, I just might in a couple of years. The video I have of Anderson performing the needle trick is not the one with the 'reverse' camera trick. The footage seems undoctored and the difference between that and what I have seen with the trick is that the needle seems to be genuinely through the middle of his arm, rather than just through the surface skin. debaser, did that name come from --the song by the Pixies? Thanks all, again Duncan

I enjoyed the shock magic booklet but in paperclip through the arm I missed the blood......I need the blood.

The best needle through arm is one made by George at Viking Magic. It comes with a needle and the right kind of blood. It's well made.

I was wondering how Harry did it so cleanly on his video. Andrew Maynes version does tackel one problem but as you mention the skin on my forearm is to tight also. Lately I've been experimenting with the skin in the bend of my arm. This looks good to me but I havent tried it in the real world yet.
I bought a model that was supposed to be the Anderson model but the bulb was glued on so the firt live preformance the needle went through the bulb and driped blood. make sure you get the screwed on bulb version. I'm reading here about all the different versions. Can somebody tell me the difference in each one? Are they all the same except for the bulb?

As far as I can gather they all use the same gimmick. The only diffrence appears to be the build quality.
