Well, the reason behind it. Portal, Lottery, 13, and even slo-mo duck are great routines, with emotions attached to them.

The steel plate was not well routined. If he was walking through the plate, or if there were some parameters about it, (surrounded by spectators, spectator holds cloth, etc) then ok. But it just seemed to be contrived, or filler.

I'm known to be always wrong though, so...

Hi Guys

I think the Steel Plate illusion is in the show for the reason that it ticks all the boxes.

1) Audience Participation
2) Comedy
3) Drama
4) It is truly Baffling

I think his speech in particular is hilarious; "This man is a brute" is fantastic stuff.

I don't think its a filler as its the second effect after the Shadow Box appearance, it is more a good illusion that introduces all aspects of the show you are about to see. If you have never seen Copperfield before this is a good start and allows the show to build gradually into the longer more impressive illusions.

What do you think?

Rich,

Touche. I forgot about the brute and the air freshener. IT just struck me as kind of a lull. What did you think of the baby prediction?

Ill be honest I don't really remember much about it. It made no real impression on me.I saw his show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas last September. I was most impressed with Lottery and Portal.

In particular the Portal Vanish on the platform that swings out above the audience. Its not very often something totally stuns me these days having read quite a bit of literature on the subject of illusion, however this one fooled me totally.

I still think he is the best in the world. Copperfield is just in need of some time off and a new direction for his show as its toured for a while now.

What did you think of the Portal Vanish?

The steel plate illusion is an Andre Kole creation. I saw him do it from about 6 feet away years ago and it still stands out in my mind as one of the most amazing things I've seen live. I think David's presentation is good but nothing compares to seeing the thing done right under your nose in a church!

Rich,

Portal was tight, the base was phenomenal. I'd seen it on his special, but it was great to see it live.

Like I mentioned before, even though the show had some effects that weren't up my alley, it was still great to see Copperfield live.

Portal really doesn't use a base. It is based on a principle created by Jarret.

Yes really. The base looks so thin because it is thin. Just like a lot think that he uses stooges more than he actually does.

I have read The Complete Jarrett by Jim Steinmeyer and the Portal vanish has been so well revamped that I do not recognise the method from anything contained within that book?

Anyone got a page number for reference?

Hi all,

I have a tip for you concerning the Portal illusion. Think of a snake swallowing its prey, just really fast, that's Portal.

Re Copperfield's appearance: People close to him have been quoted in reliable sources as having expressed concern about his health, due to his unremitting work schedule and reluctance to take sufficient time to decompress. recently he's appeared very haggard.

I have heard of a tropical island where the waters and leaves will apparently rejuvenate the body and fortify anyone’s health Smile

A good friend of mine, a non magician, will be seeing DC live for the first time in the next few days. I'll be very interested to hear his opinion of the show when he returns from his holiday. I'll let you all know how he and his friends found the show.

They are also going to see Lance Burton on my recommendation, not that I'm jealous at all Smile

I have just procured 2 tickets 7th row for my father and I to attend one of Dave's Casino Rama performances and am curious to see his reaction to the whole show. My dad has been to David's shows before, but has not been in nearly a decade and it will be interesting to see his experience of Dave's current selection. For myself it will be the 8th time that I will have seen this show and it is always special occsion to see a show of this caliber and true magic for those who believe. Hopefully, my pop will be selected for 13 and I'll enjoy the ride home while he speaks of his experience, but does not belay the secret...ahh true magic!

I think it is a shame that a modern icon of magic has to always work in so much "blue" material all of the time. I am not a prude, but it seems to me that if he removed the r-rated material and added some fresher, more family-friendly material, that his show would be much more enjoyable.
