I just started to read/study mentalism.
My experience with magic was: you had to buy/try 1000 effects to obtain 1 that works for you. Any thoughts on how to improve the ratio in this arena(mentalism)?

A rather crude and general statement, but something that is fairly true (at least for me) with mentalism:
You rework them until they suit you (either that or you create something yourself which is harder said than done) as mentalism is somewhat more flexible and personal than trying to come up with the patter for a cut and restored rope trick. Of course that doesn't mean that you can or want to re-work everthing you come across. Most of my purchases are books/booklets - and even if you don't want to use an effect as described there is usually a good chance that something about the routine will give you some inspiration that leads you in another direction. I was going to give another kind of answer, but I'm in a good mood tonight Regards, Kris Sheglova
The above is all rubbish, except that which you chose to believe

The risk in mentalism is that you have to buy/try 2000 effects to obtain 1 that works
for you, instead of 1000. As to what to do, I think Kris was pretty much on the spot. Mikael |

I at least have some satisfaction when I read a book and get 2 effects out of it.

The problem is that the "magic" (which includes mentalism) market has become so diluted with new books, videos, and props. Anyone with an even remotely original idea puts it on the market. This leaves a lot of subpar material out there being marketed, as well as stuff that is repeated.
How do you sift through the stuff? Here is what I do. Get recommendations! (This forum is great for that stuff.) I personally do not buy ANYTHING (magic/mentalism wise) without either: A) Having it recommended to me by a trusted source. B) Having seen it in action myself. Sadly, ads for products in our area of expertise tend to be "less than informative." NOTE: I lumped mentalism and magic together because they tend to be very similar markets. I realize there is a difference between mentalism, magic, and mental magic. I do not wish for this thread to degenerate into "I am a mentalist, not a magician!" type arguments.
