I realize that this probably belongs in another thread devoted to sales and such, but as it is almost exclusively of interest to card workers, I thought I'd put it here to at least give some of the folks (like me) that rarely read the other categories the opportunity to see it.
I created lecture notes on the second deal for the 52 Convention in Buffalo this past weekend. Those notes are now being offered to the general public as well. The notes are geared towards beginning second dealers and are NOT intended for those that are already experts in second dealing. If you're a pro already you probably won't learn much. But...if you're interested in the second deal but didn't know where to start, or if you just want to improve your knowledge of the deal, I think you may find these notes useful. The notes are spiral-bound and are 26 pages long. I cover the basics of both strike and push-off seconds and I've included several practice drills and list several effects that I think are great for improving your second deal. Please note that these effects are not taught, just referenced. You will have to track them down on your own. Finally, I have a fairly extensive bibliography of second dealing resources at the end of the notes. It includes virtually every major second deal write-up that I could locate. If you're interested, you may PM me or email at: jasonengland1971@yahoo.com The notes are $20 + $5 shipping anywhere in the US, $7 shipping anywhere in Canada, $9 shipping anywhere else in the world (all via Priority Mail). I take Paypal at the above email or PM me for Check/Money Order information. Thanks! Jason England PS: The notes are also available from H&R Magic Books.

Jason,
Glad to see you producing some lecture notes! I snagged up a copy for H&R when it hit the site this past week, before I saw this post. I look forward to gleaming what I can from your notes to add to my methods. I also look forward to your resource listing. I hope to find your methods and intentions are to combine all false dealing techniques. I hope you'll be producing more of these types of notes. Such as the center, bottom and Greek deals. And your methods for putting it all together in a smooth and rhythmic style. Watching you, Paul and Richard at TAOM was quite a treat. I know you have lots to share in dealing and shuffling techiques. I hope this first set of lecture notes sets you on this course. I'll be buying the collection. Best of Luck at the Table, SW

I just picked up Jason’s Second Thoughts and felt compelled to comment on them.
Mr. England has written a wonderful booklet. He has managed to fit the technique, finesse, variations and complexity of the second deal into a concise, well thought out treatise. The deals taught are very practical and natural. His descriptions and illustrations are extremely clear. Jason even includes a great bibliography. I knew several of the sources he names, however, there were many I never knew existed. A fantastic resource! After reading Second Thoughts, it became obvious to me that Jason has spent more time false dealing than I have spent on all of magic and sleight of hand. If these notes are any indication of the quality of card work Jason is capable of, I look forward to seeing him in person. More importantly, I look forward to the next installment in his series…My bottom deal needs work. Thank you, Jason, for your wonderful contribution to the art! T. Pico |

T. Pico,
Thanks for your kind words. I've received positive feedback from a number of people including yourself. As stated before, the notes are geared towards people just learning to second deal, but I believe there are a number of things in the notes that even seasoned false dealers could stand to read (again). Incidentally, I'm currently working on notes on the bottom deal that will be even more comprehensive. Jason

I'm glad to hear it! I hope you'll slip some Greek seasoning into the mix. Thanks again for producing this series. I noticed you hit the top 10 at H & R Magic Books.
I found your touches on the push-off second to be very helpful. That type of second has eluded me for a while but now I'm certain on the right track. Keep up the good work! SW

Why don't you just buy the notes? Geez.

Because I want to know what I'm buying.

Just buy the notes I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.
As for what second deal you should use. That's up to you. use what you feel fits your needs and you do well. Asking what second deal to use is like asking what kind of car should I drive? It's all a matter of opinion. The bottom line is this. Use the method that works best for you. |

And I would add, keep practicing again and again, use different decks, old, news, bridge size, poker size, paper ones, platic ones, practice slow, fast, hands warm, hands cold, try to take, try to sail, practice in front of multi ways mirrors...
Don't believe one instant that the second deal is an easy move (even the strike one). It will takes you months, maybe years if you really want to master it. It's one of my favorite move. |
