I am working on a new show that will involve a basketball theme. Do any of you have any suggestions of tricks or effects that could be included? I recently purchased the Insta Ball from a fellow Café member and am working on two stage illusions that use the basketball theme. Any other ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks Steve S. |

I know there is an effect called Double Dribble, where you produce not one, but two basketballs from a briefcase. Here is a link to the effect:

Thanks for the idea. I already have the double dribble effect and am trying to figure a way to use it.
Anyone have any ideas about how to make a basketball spin on my finger and then pull my hand away and leave the ball spinning in mid air? |

What's your backdrop for the spinning basketball? Something invisible coming out of the background would work under the right stage conditions.
How about a levitation leap to dunk the basketball?

OK, who out there has some old copies of Magic Magazine?
Serously, the "Magic" pro basketball team had a magician do half-time stuff back in the early 90s and there was a bit about in Magic. As I recall he put a ref in a stretching type illusion and suspended his assistant on a stack of balls. That might give you some ideas if nothing else. |

These are great ideas. Keep em coming. I would like to know more about the magician that performed at the Magic basketball games.

BH, that might be seen as sacralidge in a ball game. Not to mention that could get pricy if you need a new ball each time.

You could make something appear inside the basketball. Since the ball is big and it`s stage magic, it could be signed jumbo card for instance

Vanish a signed basketball and make it appear in a box hanging above the stage.
Pop and restore a basketball. Billiard balls made to look like tiny basketballs with the production of 2 balls from jumbo silks at the end. Make someones name and number appear on a jersey as a prediction effect. Do a dream vacation routine using a make-believe game. Who played, who won, the score etc. Levitate a assistant and use the hoop and it's net to pass over the girl as she floats.

Thanks Chris... and others! GReat ideas.
While hanging out at the magic shop this weekend one of the guys threw out an idea of taking an invisible basketball and dribbling, ball handling through the leggs, etc. and then shooting the invisible ball at a hoop and a real ball pops throught the hoop and net. Could use black art? Anyone got any ideas? |

Hi Steve. Glad to see you are working on a routine. I hope the Insta-Balls will be of some help. I love your idea of the spinning ball. Seems it would be easy enough to accomplish with the right background and lighting conditions.
Maybe you could create a zombie effect. It might be possible to refinsh a zombie ball to make it look like a basketball. It's Halloween, so there should be plenty of orange and black paint available! :) Regan

OK, here is a possible variation on your invisible basketball. You have a large paper pad with a hoop drawn on it. You shoot the ball, it magically appears on the paper going through the hoop. Then, you do a variation on the bowling ball out of the large paper pad (Kevin James' illusion, if I recall) and a real basketball falls out of the pad.

Or simply toss the ball and watch it fall through the hoop. The net can move as the ball falls through it (I.T.) A few more invisible object effects could make it something quite interesting to watch.

Thanks everyone for the interesting ideas. I have been working on the floating basketball and have it working in my garage using a strong black thread and a small hook glued to the basketball.
I still have a couple of things to work out with it though. I have never used black thread before on a stage. I can easily find it in my garage, but how do I make sure I find it on a lit stage? I guess I will have to just experiement. Has any of you had to do somthing like this before? I guess I could mark the floor with a piece of tape to know where the approximate area of the thread was located? PS - my thread has a 4 or 5 inch loop in the end which seems to make it easy to hook with ball. I am concerned however if there is any breeze or air flow on the stage. It could make the thread swing back and forth and make it hard to find. |

Steves7,
The BA could be used for hanging the ball with the hook in the net under the hopp. Dribble the invisible ball and "dunk" it to release the visible one. Pick it up, spin it on your finger (proud of your goal) and leave it spinning in mid-air... Looking really good, in my mind! Good luck, Gene |
