I'm always on the lookout for different ways to promote myself, and was wondering how others do? There aren't many magicians in my area (if there are, they don't promote themselves!) and I want to try something new!
Business Cards Most people use business cards, I've taken Martin Sandersons advice and had some top quality ones done, and to his credit, they have done the trick. 90% of people comment on how good they feel. They are 400gsm matt laminated, and even splash proof!(handy in a bar when the tables are wet, etc). if I have a good business card, people know I'm a pro. If I have a self made one, on perferated card, on poor quality card....well you decide who you'd hire. Leaflets/Brochures I've been playing with this idea, and touch wood its been going good! This year I made a 1/3 A4 brochure (single a4 page folded in three) and had one for corporate, one for weddings. each one had previous clients and information on the types of shows etc. I leave them on a bar in a local pub, and they've been flying off the shelves, and when people book me they tell me they've picked them up at the bar! that's all I use at the moment, but Ive heard postcards are quite popular in the USA. does anybody in the UK use these? I am advertising for close up/strolling/table hoppin gigs....but I think this thread could apply to any style, stage or close up. |

My personal opinion would be to never use myspace to get me gigs. A website that is well branded and targeted to your intended market will serve you much better and your response rate will be much greater. It is also much easier for a prospect to type in a simple web url then a lengthy one. Just my opinion mind you.

Kyle glad you siad it as it seems to be the wave of the future according to some.
To others it is a place sexual predators prefer. To me I simply stay away. I don't know if it is good or bad, I just don't need it for me is all.

Exactly. For me it is not a method of marketing that I want to do. I just find many more effective methods out there that just work so much better for my wife and I.

Just remember that having a good act or a good show means nothing if you can not fill those seats or have that phone ringing. A great show is a start and is a must as you must have a good product or service to offer before any marketing can work for you. But once you have that good show and that great act, you need marketing to let your prospects know about you and what you have to offer.

I use myspace to let my friends (as in people I actually know who also have a myspace) when I am performing in their neck of the woods. But I wouldn't want to use it on any of my marketing materials for customers. However, for the person above who said they book some shows from it - I say, "Good for them." I am glad they are using it to get results. I on the other hand use business cards, postcards, a website, word-of-mouth, and most of all, a good show that get's booked when people see it. Word gets around...with some help from me and the other marketing things mentioned.
Also, press releases and brochures have been good to me. |

I have the same concerns about myspace, HOWEVER.....
When major motion pictures aren't even getting their own domain, but using myspace, you know there's something to it. It's not like they couldn't afford to get their own domain. I'm sure most of the movies that use this are ones that appeal to the under 25 generation, but with the way friends network on myspace....wow, what a quick way for word to travel!

I now a bunch of guys with great acts who do them for their plants regularly.
Having a good act is only half the battle. SELLING an act is the other 90%. (yea that was a math joke guys think about it) Kyle most guys can't even get to the "cheeks in seats" part of it. I also know a whole bunch of guys with mediocre acts at their best, who are working 6 nights a week for some reason. go figure

Danny, you reminded me of another "grouping" of people:
there are actually 10 types of people, those who understand binary and those who don't. :D Scott Sorry, didn't mean to sidetrack the thread! |

I think it comes down to a few things. 1) who is your intended target market and 2) what type of an image and impression do you want to make to that audience. For my wife and I are target market and most of our intended prospects are not the folks that frequwent myspace. This certainly factors into what we do and how we do it. As I have stated before, this is just my personal opinion and it is what I have decided works for us. We just realized that a very well defined and targeted website that is profesisonally done works much better for us to turn suspects into prospects and then into clients.
Having your act is one thing but getting people to know about it is almost everything. It really is what Danny has stated above. You have to know and be willing to sell your act throught effective and active marketing. having a show is not enough if people do not know about it. Kyle

Kyle,
You're right on track. I have spent a while developing my image. Everything I do, magic, marketing, adverting, everything is designed to be consistent with the image I want to project. I stay away from myspace and other similar sites because, as a whole, they contradict what I am trying to convey to my clients. Along similar lines, if you want to do big corporate work, don't have a page on your internet site that advertises you as "Chuckles the Clown". It will drive the serious business people away. Myspace will do the same thing. That being said, if you are serious about marketing to the myspace demographics, it's a perfect vehicle.

MySpace, (http://www.MySpace.com) like ANY other tool is only as good as what we do with it. MySpace, all by itself is just a huge online community. Like money, a hammer, a movie or any other thing is neither good nor bad, it just IS, and in this case it "IS" what we make of it as a marketing and outreach tool.
It CAN (and is) used to create all sorts of results and returns, or it is a useless chunk of cyberspace depending on all the "Who, What, When Where, Why's and wherefores" of this tool. Like a hammer, it's not right for EVERY JOB, but it can be used, as PART of an ensemble of tools in a toolbox to build a VERY SUCCESSFUL outcome and generate real results! It, like any other tool, is simply what you make of it and how you apply it to your success. All by itself is neither good nor bad. Don’t take anyone’s word for it... be intelligent, think, investigate and see for YOURSELF! To the original question: A nice mix of medias and mediums including business cards, letters, web presence, printed promotions, electronic medias, and LOTS of LIVE Human Interaction and Re-Elationships. Just another perspective. Do with it what you will. I am at your service and In HIS Service, "Book em' Deano!" in Reno <><

Myspace will do the same thing. Well, I'll defer to Dean on this comment. It comes down to what you want from it. Just because you work the corporate market doesn't mean myspace is "bad." A lot of big name performers who work corporate venues, cruise ships, hospitality suites etc are on myspace. Why? The same reason I am...fan base. I do fairs and festivals, and I've started letting people know they can reach me at myspace. And you know what I've found, I actually get MORE people coming up out of my crowds saying, "Do you have a business card?" etc and asking more questions about the show. Is it only because I'm now on myspace? Nope. Of course not. But I will say, I've made some good connections on MySpace. Speaking of myspace - I totally UNLEASHED MySpace... Check it out here! Send an ADD request if you'd like! Let me know what you think! Robert

The part of the equasion you are missing is "who do you want to promote too?'
To generalise about how to promote is useless unless you have some idea of who the material is going too. Different material for comedy clubs, service clubs, restaurants, corporations, fairs, and so forth. So who is the target?
