I just bought a Neilsen Dinamo from a reliable Café member (thanks abbascup) and have been playing around with it for a while. Love the prop, but I was wondering if anyone had some tips to make the "moves" less obvious. I read in an older thread about doing the necessary work as the card was turned over, but I'm not sure of the proper handling. Any help would be appreciated, by PM if necessary.
Thanks, Harv BTW, I posted the same question in Secret Sessions, but thought I might get a better response in this section (since no-one has responded at all in Secret Sessions). |

Bill Abbott has put out a DVD starring a Canadian magician named Merlin. It's called Merlin's Classic Workers DVD Set (available at Hocus Pocus). Merlin performs a great version of What's Next - both with patter and silent. His routine and changeover moves are VERY SMOOTH!

Thanks....I've heard of this DVD. I already have a routine, so I'm really just looking for a few tips or ideas on the handling.

As you're holding the card up, be sure to not keep it absolutely still...remember the old, basic "large movement covering the smaller"? If you move it around while you're NOT doing the move, it won't be noticeable when you are. Just my thoughts. I've used the Tenyo "What's Next" since around 1975, and about 10 years ago I bought the Dinamo (EXCELLENT version). More recently, I bought the octagonal (or is it sextagonal; can't remember how many sides it has) version that Chalet makes. It makes sense, too, since you go from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 to 5...natural progression with this one. Still a great effect. For those of you who think "What's Next" is a basic, childish effect, keep in mind that Copperfield keeps one on hand as a filler in case of emergency. Look to the right of his stage setting, usually on the ladder-looking thing.

I move the spots (first) while I "reveal the secret" to the audience. My hand is moving anyway to "show the secret". Besides, this "revealing" gives enough misdirection.
The second and last move of the spots I do while the card is turned, and I use misdirections by asking a question and having my eyes on the front side of the card (the site the audience sees, too). For me, it works better to move the spots when the card is turned (and not in the process of turning). Possibly because when you turn the card, the focus of the audience is on change. When the card is already turned, you focus the attention on the front site of the card by revealing something on that side, explaining something or asking a question, etc. Try to only move your thumbs to place the spots. |

Has anyone but me noticed that the handling on both is slightly different? The spots are not in the same places.
I have been doing What's Next since Cronkite was a Cub Scout, and when I purchased Dinamo, I have not used it because the handling feels so awkward. I thought it was odd the "you knows" would not be in the same place, as I thought there was only one place they could go. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! Danny,
The reason that Dinamo is awkward is because it is "left-handed"! Norm Nielsen is a 'lefty', and therefore the handling was designed for left-handed performers. For $40, you can get the BEST handling of Dinamo EVER by a right-handed performer. Merlin's Classic Workers 2 DVD set. I produced and directed the discs, so if you don't agree with me after your purchase I'll take them back at face value. Cheers, Bill Abbott |

Bill,
You da' man! With a deal like that all I can say is, where do I sign up? A lefty! Sonovagun. I am holding the thing in my hand right now, it's for a lefty! Sonovagun! Heh, as a lefty I say, "Amen!" Bring on more customized tricks for us! After all, we ARE the only ones in our right mind!

Ah, so that's why: the Dynamo spot-card is designed for left-handers!
Personally I do not mind (I am right-handed), either of them works fine, just the other way round. But I have to stick to one for a while (beware of practicing with one, and then having the other one at shows), or my mind will get confused... |

So that's why I have to start the routine in my left hand! I thought mine was defective!! LOL! BTW, please to all, let's not start another flaming session here. I had a chance to check out the trailer for the Merlin DVD, as well as the routines included on the DVDs. They're not my "cup of tea", and although Merlin's handling of the Dinamo looks OK, I wouldn't spend $40 just for that.

Left handed? Sounds like a sales pitch to me. There is no hand preference with this type of trick ... you just place your hands where they need to go. If you learned Dinamo first, "What's Next" would seem awkward!
I have found the easiest way to "cover" the move is to make it a part of the turning the card over. As I turn the card, that's when I slide the dot. It's no move, really ... just keep the hand in place and touch the dot as the card turns. A little practice, and you'll be doing it without thinking. |

Is one or the other better for close-up/parlor situations? Where can I get What's Next? A quick search on a handful of magic Internet sites didn't show it available.
Thanks.

I don't know what happened before, but I've found What's Next on a bunch of sites; must have had a senior moment...
Still want to know about advantages/disadvantages of the various versions for close-up. Thanks.

Hi Marty,
Eddie Gardner, over at Diamond's magic in Peabody, MA, has 'em. It is a parlor/stage trick. I don't think it would be what you were looking for if you are doing close up. Marty,
I think Dinamo is better regardless of the venue (and regardless of whether you are right or left handed ... sheesh!) The dots are flat, and that makes them more deceptive. "What's Next" has big ol' fat dots which can even cast a shadow if you're not careful! |

I guess I'll be making a trip down to Peabody to check out the various versions.
I attended an IBM Ring meeting, Ring 122 in Boston, and a fellow did What's Next while pointing out some of the possibilities for patter. If you present it as just an effect, I think it would fall flat; but if you have a good story to go along with the effect, I think it could be very charming and entertaining.

Marty,
Right on. It is a great little trick when done well. Regardless of what some people will say, Tenyo's "What's Next" is just as deceptive as Dinamo. I own both. When David Copperfield performs this trick in his live show (and he still does this from time to time), he uses Tenyo's "What's Next". And let's face it, he could afford any version he wants. Best, Dan- P.S. Tell Eddie over at Diamond's I said hi! "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! Yes, but Copperfield does it from stage where there is distance between him and the audience. I, too, own both versions. I think Dinamo is superior. The dots on "What's Next?" protrude about 1/8", and I find that often when you have lighting from above, as in overhead fluorescents, a shadow is cast. This can be a spoiler. I have also found that, with use, the flocking starts to wear away from the "What's Next?" version. It's not a bad version, and certainly cheaper; I just happen to think that Dinamo is better.
Marty asked, so I'm giving him an honest evaluation, Dan. What's the problem? I can't state my opinion? I thought that's what this forum is about! I don't think it makes me any more "clever," but it IS my opinion. I disagree with you, Dan, so deal with it. |
