Starrpower,
Believe me, I have no problem with somebody like you disagreeing with me. If you had actually read my post, you could see I was responding to your references about Dinamo and the left-handed (or not in your opinion) handling. You have pointed out twice now what your opinion is of the people who thought the prop was left-handed. This quote in particular I thought was unnecessary: "(and regardless of whether you are right or left-handed ... sheesh!) " What was the point of the "Sheesh", other than to point out how stupid you think some people are? Bravo, it must be wonderful to go through life with the knowledge that you are so much more intelligent than others that you can belittle them in public forums with comments like this. Nicely done. My comment to you had nothing to do with "What's Next", or the differences between it and Dinamo. As far as What's Next goes, I use it in about 5 PAID shows per week, from about 10 feet away with overhead fluorescent lighting, and have never had a problem. You are entitled to your opinion, but that has not however been my experience with the prop, and I use it quite often in paid engagements. "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! "Sheesh"
I am from England, and am not familiar with this word. Does it have anything to do with Sheesh Kebab? |

Payne presented a nice version of this effect in his lecture at PCAM this past summer. (Yes, I was paying attention.)

I own a "Dots Next" and a Dinamo. Both great, in my opinion!
I also have a "Dubious Domino", which I would not recommend. (It looks cheap compared to the other two.) I only use it for practise. You might consider whether you want a white card with black dots or a black card with white dots. Maybe one colour suits better with your act? Maybe if your clothes and background are all black (or all white), you may prefer the opposite colour? |

If you're looking at just the prop, I think the black dots on white probably shows up a little better, but it's negligible. Dinamo (white on black) is a bit larger than What's Next, which may offset any difference. The contrasting color of clothing may be a legitimate factor, as well.
What was the version in which a dot became a hole at the end? |

Diamond's Magic didn't have Dinamo, but he did have What's Next. I can see how it might be a concern, but I'm not going to worry about it for now. I might take the suggestion of making up my own dots.
Now, to come up with some patter that makes sense...

You can get Dinamo directly from Nielsen Magic: http://www.nnmagic.com/magicitems/stagemagicpage_al.htm

I found service from Nielsen magic very good. They answer an e-mail right away; they take PayPal, although this is not said on the web-site; and the package arrived (in the Netherlands) really quick (in lees then a week).
I can recommend it highly! |

I have shiny red/pink dots on black card. Plays well for kids and adults.
I also own the other black dot on white card, but the black dot is thick and you can tell that it's not flat on the card. |

The white one sounds like "What's Next?"
Years ago, during the Oreo - Unlock the Magic! campaign, Nabisco used Dinamo painted white with the dots silk screened to look like Oreo cookies. Norm must have sold a ton of them! |

It's my understanding that Tenyo has recently started making a "What's Next" card with flat spots, instead of the bulky ones they used to make for years.
Starrpower: I think the version with the hole was made by Ben Stone/Delben and was called something like "Delben Domino". I'd sure like to get my hands on one of those. Ron |

I did What's Next tonight in a friend's dining room. People were about 5 feet away, but someone about 10 feet away immediately said, "The dots are three dimensional." I just ignored it, but she said, "I bet those dots are moveable." I then put the card away with an "oh well", but then had second thoughts. I did the effect anyway and folks enjoyed it, but a few had it completely figured out, and they had never seen it before.
I guess I am going to make up some thinner dots, or maybe order a Dinamo. I like the effect enough to try and figure out how to make it more convincing.

Marty,
She might also have just been guessing. I would be willing to bet she didn't see anything and just took a guess. It's tough when you do stuff for your friends, as they have absolutely no problem calling out guesses and looking at your face to see if they are right. Worse, this guess can spread like wildfire throughout the rest of the audience. And if they all get on board with the first "guesser", the trick is hosed whether or not the guess is right. Also, she may have guessed correctly because you were actually looking at the card when you moved the spots. That is a dead giveaway and something not covered in the instructions. It would be the most natural thing to do as you want the spots to be right. She was then able to look closely at the spots and "think" she saw that they were 3D (unless she has 20-2 vision, I doubt she actually did). The hardest part about pulling this trick off is doing it blind. You can't look directly at the card when you are doing the dirty work. You make "the move" while talking to the audience, and then catch a glimpse of the spots when you look at the FRONT of the card while you are showing it to the audience. Done correctly, this is one of the most baffling little gems in the world. When you are first learning to do it, it is also one of the easiest tricks to do badly (And I know, because when I started doing it, I did it horribly!). I see that you live in Arlington, MA. If you would like, the next time you are going down to Diamond's Magic, shoot me a PM and I'd be happy to meet you over there and go over the handling with you. I'll also bring my Dinamo, and you can check that out as well. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! No; before I even moved the dots, she said something like, "I bet those are movable. They probably are magnets."
I definitely need to work on my presentation, but these folks figured it out before I could screw it up.

Friends will be vocal about it. Did you still do the trick? In that situation, if a person said that before I even started to do the trick, I would have just tossed it back in my bag and said, "Whew, well, I guess I don't have to do that one." I would have then looked at my watch and said, "That's going to save us some time." All of it said in a joking manner, but it still subtly gives the person the hint that calling out stuff is probably not the best way to go about things. After a person says something like that, if it is a small group, continuing to do the trick just gives the person a chance to cement their argument. I think a person would be better off just throwing it back in the case and leave them wondering whether or not they were right. I mean, at that point, from what you've described, they do not even know what the trick is. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! She could have been guessing ... or it could be that, in close proximity, the "What's Next?" dots are obvious because of their 3D quality.

Yes, Starrpower, I am sure you are right.
My eyesight must be bad, as well as everybody else that does this trick without any problems. From two feet away, I can't see them. Like the people that say they can see the string when I'm doing an invisible thread trick. Only problem being is I'm usually doing a trick with a magnet at the time. That's it, I'm making an appointment with my optometrist. The trick is a bit like a thumb tip. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! I still have a trick called Pop Eyed Pips, with the thread. I think it could be this same? Am I right?
Hello, Danny Hustle. I am new to this forum, and it seems that what you say makes much sense. Why are people so angry here? I read the posts of yours, and you sound like you know what you are talking about |

You are right on, my friend! That was a very similar trick put out by the great Ken Brooke, using the same principal if I'm not mistaken. In Pop Eyed Pips, the card was an ace of diamonds that changed to four, two six, and ten.
I only wish they were still available! Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! I’m so sick of posts being deleted without any reason given, and by unknown people at that." - Steve Brooks Sep 7, 2001 8:38pm ©1999-2014 Daniel Denney all rights reserved. |

That's the one! I have two of them; one is very worn, but the other I use in much of my shows. I like it better than the one with spots. It looks like real cards. I will sell you my old one, Danny, if you want. LOL
