Eugene Burger did a similar effect at a lecture at the Matic Arts Studio, but at the end one side had a lot of spots (maybe 12, I didn't count) and the other side had no spots. It used a completely different principle, even simpler than What's Next. He passed it around, so simple, yet effective.

Another nice handleing of this prop is on Chris Capeharts new DVD. You get this and quite a bit of other pieces of gold to boot.

I've been playing around with this trick recently. This is obviously just a presentation for youtube not what I would do on stage.
The handling is mostly the same as the Merlin DVD (which is great btw) with a few differences: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOu6-lGqUJ8 It could be smoother but it's still a lot less fiddly than most of the youtube handlings I saw (if that means anything...) |

I had the "What's Next?" ver about 30 years ago. I now use one call "Hoppin Spots". The dots are nearly flat and it works just fine. Yes, it is best to keep the card moving while making the change and don't look down at your hands while making the change. I do however glance at the positioning to make sure that they are centered properly.

Two quick points about What's Next:
1) Always be moving when you adjust the dots 2) Don't EVER look at your hands I don't think anyone has ever said anything at one of my shows and I've done it hundreds of times. People have a tendency to treat the effect lightly and not work it as hard as they might work other effects. But you need to take time with this one to get it perfect. It's a very effective trick when done properly. David
