Hi Folks,
I just wanted to share with you a little story that happened today at work. Every Friday afternoon the people in the office get me to do something - it happens a lot with some of you I bet. Anyhow, today I did Jay Sankey's Divided Attention from his 22 Blows To The Head DVD. It's a really simple effect based on an old principle, but for those of you who don't know, it involves the performer making a prediction and handing it to a spectator. The performer then brings out a strip of paper and runs a pair of scissors up and down telling the spectator to say "Cut" when they feel the urge. The upshot is you cut through the strip of paper, cutting a word in half. The word you have cut matches the prediction on the piece of paper. The strip contains 30 or so completely different words.
Anyhow, today was the first time I performed it and it got such a strong reaction from everybody. What made it extra special though, was that I'd first made a prediction on a pad, ripped it out and threw it in the bin, saying I felt compelled to do so. The first prediction was a picture of Mountains. When I did the effect proper, the word cut was Bicycle, which matched the second prediction I'd made, obviously. When things had calmed down, someone said, "What did you throw in the bin?" They had a look, saw it was Mountains, then the girl who had said "cut " freaked out because directly below the word "Bicycle" was "Mountain". So what? Well, when she told me to cut, I asked her if she wanted to move the scissors up or down. She said she wanted me to move them up slightly. She thought that had she not have said this, then I would have cut into Mountain and my original prediction would have been correct, but she thought I knew she would tell me to do this, that's why I changed the prediction.
Anyhow, wanted to share it. Divided Attention is a good effect and so simple.
Best regards,
Leeo

Nice one Leeo! It's amazing how often people big you up just by getting carried away themselves, I love it!
Trouble is that there have been many times people have asked me to do "the one where you did such and such" and I know that I couldn't begin to do that even if I tried... Wait till a couple of weeks have passed and the girl has told a few people, making it more and more unbelieveable with every telling!

Part of the wow factor has to be attributed to you and to your particiapnts more than to the [old] secret method employed

Leeo,

I think that you would really like Clip Line Deluxe if you are looking for a version that plays a bit larger (in the Osterlind Mind Mysteries set). I think you did a really excellent job and got really lucky. However, when I say "lucky" I also have to clarify by quoting Pasteur: "Chance favors the prepared mind", i.e., you were lucky because you were prepared.

If Chuck Hickok is still selling his version definitely go with that. As much as I like others (I think I first read it in Harry Lorayne's The Magic Book) such as RO's, the ability to personalize the article is priceless in many performance venues.

And great job Leeo!

Good Thoughts,

Bill

Hi Bill,

I'm actually not familiar with the Chuck Hickok version, what do you mean by personalizing the article?

Where does one find this version? I've always thought it neat to be able to write the words in a column in script? Anybody try that?

Is that in Chuck Hickok's "Mentalism Incorporated"? If so, what is the exact title of the effect (rendition of Sankeys Divided Attention)? Also, has anybody else come up with intriguing ways/improvements to the effect that they'd like to share?

This is the effect that showed me how powerful mentalism could be.

One night I did it, along with some other magic tricks, and, rather than take my bow as a magician, I saw how freaked out my spec was and said that sometimes a person says they can hear me telling them to stop, sometimes they feel warm or sometimes the feel cold. Then I asked her what she felt when she said stop and she said she could hear me in her head telling her to stop. THAT'S when I began to study mentalism rather than do mental magic.

It really is astonishing how a spectator can mis remember what you did. I work in a Spanish holiday resort and quite a few tourist come back again and again, they often talk about what I did last time they were here. I WISH I could do half the things they crdit me for. They seem to just add on bits to the effect I originaly performed, Quite awkward if someone then wants to see the same thing.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

And Chuck and the other are not a "rendition" of Sankey's effect. Not sure what Jay brought to the table but the effect predates him by quite a bit.

Sorry. Wrong word. Not a rendition. Sounds like Jay didn't contribute much except perhaps weaken it by the sounds of it. I like the atmosphere of the effect. It works the sensory modalities nicely (hearing tear, feeling the cut, etc., and the method is nice and sneaky.

I second the Richard Osterlind version "Clip Line Deluxe" on Mind Mysteries Too, Vol 6 that uses a newspaper article.... it has a smoother presentation as well as a much stronger finish than the Sankey word list version of this effect.
