Throughout the spring and summer months, I teach a lot of workshops at childcare centers in my city. One of the items I've had great success in teaching (judging by the kids' reaction to it), is an effect called Mr. Baggee, which I discovered on the workshop-teaching DVD put out by James Munson.
Yesterday, I was performing a three-hour strolling gig for the 30th birthday of a local Nature Centre. The place was packed with families. At one point in the day, as I finished up performing for a small group of kids, one of the dads came over to me and tried to encourage his son to show me a magic trick that the boy had learned during the summer. When the boy replied he couldn't do it right. Then, because he left it at home. I asked him about the trick he was going to show me. As he explained it, I knew right away it was Mr. Baggee. I even asked him if that was the name, and his eyes lit up as he said, "Yes." I asked him where he had learned it, and he said a magician had come to his childcare centre sometime during the past year and taught a magic workshop to his group. Knowing that I was the only one teaching this particular effect in our city at day-cares (as far as I know), I explained that I was the one who taught it to him. His father then went on to tell me that with the five tricks that I taught his son, his son practiced them quite a bit at home, and then took a little table out on his street sidewalk. There, he began performing for his friends (I don't know if he charged a fee, or just took tips). He ended up making $6.00 for himself before his dad made him stop doing it. I tried to explain to dad how we are seeing the possible budding of a new career in his son. Dad didn't think so, but I thought it was cool that some tricks that I taught to an 8 year old boy were now being used by him to earn some spending money for himself as a street performer! More power to ya, kid! Brian |

That's great, Brian. You made an impact for sure.
I don't think many parents "want" their kid to go after this as a career! I know when my mom asked me at 13 what I wanted to be and I said a magician, her comment was something like, "That's ridiculous." She still feels that way, likely. |

You rock....
The power of positive role modeling and teaching. Some people think this stuff is crazy...others see it as a life-long opportunity. BTW, I have a little French buddy, Monsieur LeBaggie... What a great kids effect....

Excuse my ignorance - what is Mr Baggie? Sounds intriguing!
My mum still isn't happy that I'm a magician, and will often tell her friends that I'm unemployed! She never forgave the late Edwin Hooper for all the encouragement and advice he gave me!!

Kimmo, the effect referred to is off of James Munton's "How to Teach a Birthday Magic Class". It is a deadly simple, but wildly visual effect that young kids like.
I just gave my guy a French name because of the bilingual nature of my audiences. He sounds like a much more well-travelled sophisticate....LOL

Brian,
To have a clear vision is a beautiful thing. Last Sunday I was at a magic convention, and there was a 10 year old boy walking around asking people to pick a card. Everybody there was a serious magician, and this kid wasn't afraid to ask anybody. To have that kind of dedication at the age of 10 is a beautiful thing to see. I figured out what I wanted to be when I grow up at the age of 42. Seadawg, Your new avatar is really looking good. HAVE FUN Al Angello

It is great when we see the wonder kids start, but even more important are those who just love magic. If nobody wants to be entertained, then we are out of the best job on earth.
I have a young guy that I have done some joint shows with to get him out in the public eye in a busking venue. We both learn so much from each other. Remember...be nice to kids...they are designing our old folks homes....

What an enterprising young man!!
Great story, Brian. I don't do magic workshops, but I do balloon ones. I've heard from quite a few of them later on that kept it up as a hobby. Let's hope they're all not that keen though, Brian, or you could find yourself a victim of your own success. And in 10 years time, you'll be hounded out of the market by all your own proteges!!
