Hello everyone,
I have been doing some birthdays for a while now, and was wondering if you all could possibly give me some advice as to what effect I may want to work into my routine. I play a very "bumblely" magician, if you will. I play on the idea that I am the next Copperfield. I really like to put the magic in the kids' hands, and ask them how THEY did it. Magic that seems by mistake is also something I love. Can you recommend anything? Thanks, -Jacob

Hi Jacob, good question.
I think you can turn almost any item into what your talking about, but here are some I have used: Mismade Routines (flags, blocks, etc.) Hat Tears Cut & Restore Rope Of course, you have to build the routines for these items that fits what your looking for. Also consider not over-doing the bumbling magician. They will start to expect each routine to start and end the same. They will begin to realize what is about to happen, and the mystery (and fun) will be lost. I believe your basic character should remain steady, but change up the routine plots! Good luck! |

Jacob,
Two that may fit you well are... Krazy Carton and Knots Funny. They both have worked very well for me and get loads of laughs from the kids. I think you'll find them to fit your style. John |

It's also fun when the children spot the magic happening, but you don't! Half-dyed Silk is great for this. I introduce it as the 'masked magician' part of the show, and explain that I'll show them how a trick is done. Throughout the routine, I explain how there are always two hankies. They scream like crazy as the handkerchiefs appear and disappear, and I don't seem to notice!! It's just the funniest thing (especially to the adults watching) when kids are heckling you, saying that you are doing real magic!!

Thanks thus far, everyone.
I really appreciate it. Magic Jeff, Thanks for the advice. There are routines that I don't stumble into magic...if you will. Where I very much am creating all they see. But I think laughter is a HUGE part of performing for children. Jolly Rodger, I will most definitely have to check out your Ridiculous Ravioli. I would also love to see your performance, or at least hear about your Rocky Raccoon routine. I have been slowly introducing him into my routines with parents and children, and he's a ham. Haha Thanks again, everyone, and keep the ideas rolling in please! I would love to hear about what effects really blow them away. -Jacob

You gotta have a Clatter Box in there somewhere, but YOU be the one that breaks it.
Re: Magic Jeff's advice - don't overdo it. Review the act of one of the past masters of "bumbly style", Cardini. There are videos of him available. He is bumbly ... to a point... and then for a few seconds, he is awesome. Good luck!

"I will most definitely have to check out your Ridiculous Ravioli. I would also love to see your performance, or at least hear about your Rocky Raccoon routine. I have been slowly introducing him into my routines." Hello, Seeker. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have on the Ravioli. I use The Raccoon or Skunk in all my shows. I do many of the known moves with the critter, such as getting him to drink out of a paper cup and getting his head stuck.........very funny! At the end of the routine, I ask the kids if they would like to see him closer. When they say yes, he jumps into the audience. The kids go crazy, just like they do when the snakes jump out in the Ridiculous Ravioli! Others on the Café will tell you never let things jump out into the audience. I disagree. Kids love pandemonium!! |

From your avatar, I would suggest things in black and white.
Finding stuff that fits you is more important to this guy than the trick of the year or month. 1. Black and white gloves to streamer to black and white doves. 2. Black and white juggling rings that are used as: a. magic wands b. portals to produce or vanish items c. props ala improvisation games/Whose Line Is It Anyway. 3. Cards vanishing/changing to black and white confetti...(note: bring small vacuum and check with host of party) Enjoy the process..... Harris

I second Rocky; he often steals the show. And yes, I too let him jump out in the audience (twice), and the kids love it, as do the parents!

Chad and others, You might like to contribute to this thread, as it has turned into a discussion about whether things should jump out into the audience. |

Harris,
Glad you picked up on my black and white get up. As I have said before. I am not a 100% bumbly person in my act. There are times when magic is going on that is just amazing. Jolly Roger, I do not have my Rocky jump into the audience...but I will have to consider it. I use the same gags and one liners...I was just wondering if you have anything else along the way. As for you, Ridiculous Ravioli, A lot of my questions were answered on your web page and through the forum here. Steep price, though. (Maybe I'm wrong.) Are there links to some of these effects mentioned thus far? -Jacob
