Thanks for sharing Paul Gertner's Steel Cups and Balls routine. It is one of my favorites.
That was aired on World's Greatest Magic.
Michael Ammar's Routine was also aired on one of these specials as well.

I saw paul do this routine and "triple die lemma" among other things at the last A1 convention. I had no idea who he was but he was very entertianing. very polished and professional. a class act all the way.

Many years ago at an early FFFF, there was a teenager who had either hitch hiked or ridden the bus up to the Forks Hotel from Pittsburgh. No one had ever seen him before. In those days, most everyone performed and this young man proceeded to actually do the cups and balls with steel ball bearings ... needless to say he blew everyone away and stole the show. It was, of course, a very young Paul Gertner and an impact on a crowd of the top close up workers that will never be forgotten.

Paul Gertner is one of the nicest guys in the business, in addition to being a heck of a cups and balls worker. I have made contact with him at a couple of conventions.

He has every right to be full of himself, but he isn't. He is always open-minded about new information, even if it is "old" new information.

Case in point. We got to talking about the cups and balls at the Cleveland convention a couple of years ago. I asked him how old he thought the 3 ball display on the top of the cup was. He guessed at a couple of recent dates. I gave him a copy of the Hocus Pocus Jr. manuscript I had done, which shows it as far back as 1634. He was genuinely pleased to learn something new.

This is an important lesson for all of us. When we are too good to discover something new, even if it is centuries old, we have reached a low point, not a high point.

I discover something new every day. Sometimes it is where I left my glasses. Smile

It's amazing, it looks like Paul Gertner was using copper cups! I had forgotten about that since I haven't seen that clip in a long time. How he didn't dent the hell out of them, I'll never know.

Paul was very easy on those cups. He now has a set of van Dokkum brass jumbos, which he likes a lot. They have a nice bell-like ring to them.

Being that easy on copper cups for all those years serves as a good example for cup care.
Van Dokkum's are quite large, I wonder if Paul has larger final loads for them.

I was there when he bought the cups. As he packed them away he said, "Well, I guess I'll have to find a bigger ball bearing." I'm sure he has taken care of it.

Paul gertner definitely went his own way. I love his approach, despite the fact that, even had I thought of it, I wouldn't do it that way. It's so classily indigeonous to his style.
