Houdini's Vanishing Elephant was probably the brainchild of Charles Morritt, a name that should definitely be on this list.

I used as my criteria only those born after 1900, and who excelled in both the quality of their inventions as well as the quantity. Also, I only used those who I could look up on Spellbinder's Biographies. I did not include prolific inventors who merely leapfrogged off others who came before, but those who brought original magical principles into play that others immediately leaped upon and adopted. You may not agree with the names on my list, but I'm sticking to it because there is a good reason for every one of them.
Annemann, Ted (1907-1942) Braue, Frederick (1906-1962) Chanin, Jack (1908-1997) Curry, Paul (1917-1986) Dusheck, Steve (dates unknown - but 1900's for sure) Fetsch, "Hen" (1912-1961) Grant, U. F. (1901-1978) Harbin, Robert (1909 - 1978) Harris, Paul (dates unknown - but 1900's for sure) Hughes, Jack (dates unknown - but 1900's for sure) James, Stewart (1908-1996) Karson, Joe (1912-1980) Kato, Hideo (1943- ) Larsen, William W. (Sr.)(1905-1953) Marlo, Ed (1913 - 1991) Maven, Max (born Phil Goldstein , 1950 - ) Rice, Harold R.(1912 - 1981 )

I see my partner in crime (Jim Gerrish) has gotten up the nerve to post his entire list. It looks good to me. I see magicians representing many different fields (cards, ropes, mentalism, illusions and so on). Now, I will spend some time starting from his list and thinking whom I would remove in order to add someone else. I don't know if I can do it and still provide a good reason or justification for taking someone's name down to put another person in place.

Robert Harbin was a prolific creator and a wonderful man. He once told me he made little out of his creation, the Zig Zag, as it had been ripped off by so many.

I should add Jim Steinmeyer to my Brief Biographies page. Do you have a good source for info about him and what he has invented?
And I haven't forgotten to pester you about getting me a photo for your own biography.

Jack Miller if for no other reason than the gravity "Hold-Out".

Some great names on the list. I'd like to add one you don't hear of much, British inventor J.F. Orrin.
Orrin devised some very clever club/parlor type apparatus sold by Davenports, Hughes, etc. His Matchbox Transposition, and a penetration with a tennis ball called Tenapin would fool a lot of magicians today! And as a longtime collector of "clever apparatus", I'd also have to list Ed Massey. Joe |

Uncle Pete wasn't bad in his day, though sometimes there is arguments as to whether the idea was Uncle Pete's or Uncle Harry's, both were known to lift an idea or two and make a mod or two for something in the show, though neither would have ever admitted that. Uncle Pete was a good craftsman, both he and Uncle Harry used to work in machine shop before going into show business.
