Monty, your opener sounds awesome. Very original and probably hilarious to see. Great thread.

I think that open show need to be magic show or very funny!
So I open my act- set bogunia and routine with 4 magic wands, and rabbit from 3dtv with music. So all this its big effect! Great opener is very important to continue. Dudu |

Don't forget using just your body.
You can be goofy, slapstick even. A good one is the arm-twisty thing (whose technical name slips my mind...oh well, Copperfield does it...). AND DON'T FORGET Spongeballs! Bill Abbot has a wonderful routine, a SILENT spongeball opener that drives the kids crazy. |

Forgive me if I'm missing or have overlooked something but the question is The Perfect Opener (for children I presume)
Forget tricks. Ask yourself what you are trying to achieve. Think about that. Then please tell me.

The opener I've been using in all of my kids shows is actually a trevor lewis idea. Where a dvd is used to introduce you. The character on the Tv interacts with the audience, does a trick with me through the screen (silk vanish), and introduces me with funny lines and jokes. It's always gotten a tremendous amount of response and packs incredibly flat, and plays HUGE. I highly recommend it to those looking to make their shows more edgy.

Before you get bogged down with tricks I'll ask the question again.
What is it you want the opener to achieve? Or put it another way - what do YOU want to achieve with your opener?

I do kids shows and have been using the Sucker Die Box for seven years. I use the old style with the sliding gimmick, not the new one which comes completely apart.

Thanks Ed. That's what I was hoping. You've started the ball rolling.
Now there's a bit more thinking to do. A few more things I would expect a performer to be trying to achieve. Whilst it's unrealistic to expect any opener effect to do everything for you it is essential to list everything. Then you can push some basic aspects together to handle straight off and your opener needs to reinforce these and cover the other aspects. That way, you end up with the opener doing what you need it to do - leave the children if not eating out of your hands then at least knowing what is expected of them and - very important - what YOUR rules are. Try it.

Yes, that was an excellent post, Ed. I'll add one thing to it - I also want something that will really grab the attention of the adults, so they will hopefully decide to be part of the show instead of talk in the back of the room.
