Ok, I'm not usually one to post something like this, but this guy's link showed up after I uploaded my demo video... Not someone I particularly want to be associated with... Does anyone know of this guy? Where's he from?

Could stand to work on that camera timing a little bit and uh....maybe a film clip of him holding the silk up about 2 feet higher. But great way to present a big illusion for under $20. I wonder which david Copperfield he was trying to immitate.

Envy does not become you. Follow his link and you will see where he is from. He's another struggling illusionist, but because he doesn't post here, we don't know him and should all gang up on ripping his efforts to pieces. That is how magicians really help magicians. Pathetic.

I am with you on this one, Spellbinder.
Besides he is performing! He has got an audience. Ok so, the prop was not Mendoza or even Tillford and he propably got the idea for the music from DC (I have used that music in snowstorm from the day the cd was published so maybe DC got it from me..? lol) but still he is up there doing it. Very few of us here are wunderkinds-if anyone. The only real way of ever developing and becoming an original performer is to perform and that is precisely what this guy is doing. Most likely he will get much better and learn. Before anyone starts asking do I accept rip-offs: no, of course I don't but the point here really wasnt rip-offs, was it.

I guess I should have been more specific in my post. It's great that he's out there performing, but it's shameful that he's copying so much of Copperfield. He's doing a similar trick using the same music, his site looks a lot like Copperfield's. His promo uses similar text, similar layout... I think that if anyone doesn't see that as a blatant rip off, then I shouldn't have made the post.

Yea, he's got a lot of stuff. Seems like a pretty good performer too, with the exception of lacking originality in some of his presentations.

The only things that distinguish it from being a blatant rip-off of DC are the poor timing, incohesive visual between video and what is "seen" and the eternity like delay between the hanky removal and the box disassembly. I doubt DC would see the humor in what appears to almost be a comedic spoof of DC(I doubt that was it's intent). It is a performance that borders on exposure and certainly tries to replicate a distinguished professionals act. Now if this was a fund raising act or community freebie I'm ok with it...sort of. But if it is a regular ticketed illusion show I think it lacks respect, originality or the rehearsal and research that should have gone into it. And if I'm not mistaken...isn't there a color changing shirt effect while he"s in the box as well? And yes I do think this post is about rip-offs. Let's look at how this guy attempts to copy the most performed magician in all of magic.
Same clothing Same patter style Same music Same illusion Same reappearance stance Same fan blowing effect He does use a different accent! If someone is going to attempt to emulate DC at least give it the quality and attention to detail it deserves. If this guy had just changed the music I'd have given him much more credit. I feel that the lack of attention to blatant details and just wanting to look like a big illusionist is disrespectful at best. It is a disrespect to the time and research that DC puts into all his acts. There is such incongruity to where the hank is waving on the outside and where his hand is on the inside that it just wreaks of lack of attention. And I'm not sure if the shadow box without shadows is an attempt at originality or just another oversight. Some of you can justify this display all you want but somehow I don't think DC would share your warm hearted coddling sentiments. There is a huge difference between being a performer and a hack impersonator. I see people do fine and not so fine examples of Whit Hadyn's comedy ring performance all the time but not by copying his clothing, persona and exact patter. This really got me riled becuase of how cheesey so many layman think magic is these days. One not need to look far to wonder why. Take a look at the Murat video on youtube and experience how far across the performance spectrum that is from what we just winessed here. And for the record I'm not a huge DC fan. Just a huge fan of the art of magic and restoring it's dignity amongst the arts. Just look at how television and movies portray magic and magicians these days. Let's step it up a notch people. End of rant. |

I think it's kind of funny that his website has a quote of his, "Sorry...I'm different," when he has so obviously tried to copy DC.

Being from Australia I'm kinda sheltered from most of DC's material. Exactly which illusion of Copperfields is David Cat's similar?
Cheers, Mike
