Okay~ I need to cave in and invest as oppossed to trying to make all coin magic work with what I have - halves and of course, quarters. I love halves, I have the extra's needed for many effects but...
With the discussion about Homer's new DVD and many other subconscious proddings (naggings?) in my mind about many other great effects in books I currently own in relation to using the bigger dollars, it just has to be asked? Am I missing out? Yes, and I want to change that. All in all, whereabouts should I invest in the coins themselves and the needed gaffs such as a shell and so on? Can I acquire the coins from a bank...coin dealer? What should I expect to pay? Do I go for a certain overall bank of years or look? And about the expanded shell. What can I expect a good number of dollars and a gaff or two to cost? Thanks in advance for your input. I appreciate it. |

Are you asking about silver dollar coins?
They are not available at banks, but can be found at coin dealers for about ten dollars each. The gaff can be found at www. ... well you know how to get to the coin gaffer's sites. If you are going down that path you may as well fork over the cash up front so your coins match and work properly together. Enjoy.

Your not alone, I love my halves too! The thing is, as far as I believe, certain routines just cry silver dollars. Homer's "CoinOne" routine is one that does cry for silver dollars. It isn't absolutely necessary, but they make for a very "dynamic" routine!
I have Jamie Schoolcraft's Dean set of 4 Morgan 1921 silver dollars and one shell. They are absolutely great for the routine and even ease of use. They did, however, set me back $275, but they are beautifully crafted and I have a number of other routines I am working on, which do require their use. You can get them at http://www.schoolcraftprecisionmagic.com . The reason I went with the Dean set is for the near perfect match of the shell. You don't need to go to that extreme, but they are nice.....Good luck on your new coins whatever they will be.....
Where I go, so do my coins.....

To offer a little advice on getting ahead quickly on this stuff...
If you can afford one "Deans" coin or at least a 3 coin nester you can do stuff like my coins across pretty much letting the gaff manage all but the last vanish so you can focus on the productions. This is also true for coin assemblies. I trust folks with such coins are exploring Homer's "CoinOne" to exploit the clever gaffs.

About 90% of the coin magic I do is with silver dollars. You can get them at local coin dealers but Ebay is a good source. If you're interested in new coin sleights and routines that were developed to use with silver dollars, you might want to check out my hardcover coin book, the link of which is in color at the very bottom of this post.

I think I am going to have to knock off those new Puma shoes from my list now. It looks like there is a lot to explore here.

Anyone having angle problems with the larger silver dollars? They are more visual, but are they worth the risk? Interestingly enough Homer typed this in his post in another thread..."Dollar coins have more difficult angles, so for laymen, I normally use half-dollar sized coins just to be safe. I have extremely dry hands and cannot classic palm a Morgan Dollar. So I always keep half-dollars on me if I'm carrying coins".

Wow, I'm glad I found this thread. I still might have to start out with a cheapie expanded half just to learn routines, but now I know what to save up for.
On a slightly related note, I am the only one that sees the humor in the following ad? Jake's Marketplace, Inc. Has two-headed coins. Amaze your friends. Never lose in a coin toss. Jake's, a trusted name in coins and currency since 1963. |

Morgan dollars are the way to go. Once you dive in you'll never look back. I got "Dean's set" with matching flipper. It cost me a pretty penny but I've never regretted it. Jaime Schoolcraft, Todd Lassen, The Magicians coin, ... all are good places to get custom gaffs. You have to relearn some of your sleights.. due to the larger coins... but IMO it's what separates a true coin man from a card guy wannabe.... hehe

I reccommend that you first get an unexpensive set from Sasco or Johnson. If you drop the shell with the coin inside you can pretty much say goodbye to your set unless you send it directly to the manufacturer for repair. Now I nam sure you are not just going to drop it once. Trust me I have been there.
Once you have improve your skills get a set from Schoolcraft or Tom L. Use you cheap set to practice and the expensive when you perform. Joaquin |

So are you guys saying that real coin workers use the silver dollars as apposed
to the half dollars? How much more re-learning of sleights if you switch from half dollars to silver dollars? The reason I as, because I remember someone saying that doing a coins across with half dollars is rediculous...

If you can do the sleights with Halves you can do the same with Dollars.
I had no problems at all making the transition years ago. Coins accross with halves is not rediculous it is just not as visual as the dollars are and that is all. Later, Mobius |

I think you mean 3 Fly. A lot of people say if you do 3 Fly with anything other than dollars you are missing the point totally. I agree I only ever use dollars for 3 Fly now and it looks very visual!!!
To be honest the only thing I use half dollars for now are copper/silver transpos, okito box work and anything that involves the palm to palm change (I have decided that move is impossible with dollars try as I might!!) Craig P |

Yes, I agree dollars are more visual but some peoples hands are smaller. I believe kainoa harbottle uses almost exlusively half dollars and nobody complains about him...

Think about it from your audience's perspective: If you want to do 3-Fly for a stand up set for 50 people, dollars would probably be best (it's Chris Kenner who complains about people who do that routine with halves). Of course, if you're working a stand up set, maybe 3-Fly isn't the best trick to be doing? On the other hand, if you like being interactive with audience members during your coin magic (heaven forfend), keep in mind the size of their hands and what percentage of your favorite audience members have hands that can close around a stack of dollars. But perhaps interactive coin magic is overated? If you want to hear someone whine about trying to put dollars into spectator's hands, ask that guy who uses dollars all the time--Curtis Kam. |
