Some of you may not care for what I am about to post on the Café. In the past people have been criticized for this type of thing.
I have been a member of the Café for nearly 4 years now -- and I have loved every last moment of my membership here. Through the careful help and guidance of real people -- I have grown into a well taught, well rounded mentalist. I started my journey into magic at the age of six. I was bitten by the magic bug when I saw David Copperfield perform on television. The special was "An explosive encounter" (To jog memories, this is the one where Copperfield "escapes" from a locked safe inside of a building set to implode.) What an incredible experience that was -- I remember my parents taping the show -- and watching it over and over. My father was convinced that Copperfield was the real deal -- some sort of "superman". I was in awe, but not convinced… So I set out on a mini quest to “know the secret…” This was before the internet – so it wasn’t as simple as google.com/search/copperfieldsecrets… As I grew older, and saw Copperfield on TV again, and again – my quest grew stronger – I must have checked out every single book from my library a couple of dozen times… I remember my first brush with mentalism; it came at the end of a Tony Hasini video on “everyday magic”. A demo of an additional video teaching the secrets of psychics – for $29.95 + shipping and handling, you too could do what Tony did… A new spark was lit… Mentalism for me has always been a passion. Pulling a rabbit from a hat is easy. Reading someone’s mind – getting inside their heads – that is hard… I performed as a magician locally and across my home province for 9 years before I realized that the other side of me needed to come out. I had been fine tuning my skills as a mentalist for nearly 4 years before I decided to take the plunge. Retire every single piece I had spent the last 9 creating and fine tuning. Leaving what was comfortable behind… It’s sobering to have to start from scratch – finding the rhythm of your well oiled finely tuned show again. It makes you realize that even though what you were doing may have seemed easy – it isn’t… It has been a little while since I made that plunge. And I am writing this my 1000th post tonight, not just to give everyone here a little insight into my journey from magic to mentalism – but also to give a sincere thanks to everyone here on the Café for making that journey memorable, and rewarding. I’ve had opportunities I would have never dreamed of, and chances to meet people I never would have thought it was possible to. I have made fantastic friends – and grown as an entertainer. My success if due largely in part to every single set of eyes reading this post… I’m changing my screen name from icy_rabbit (meant to signify Canadian (icy) Magician (rabbit) ) to my real name Jeff Richards. With this post I move into the café’s Inner Circle – so I want to invite all of you into mine. After 1000 posts on the café I guess someone feels that I have earned that title, after the help, support, and coaching – you guys have earned it too. Thanks for everything guys and gals! Heres to another 1000! (P.S. to celebrate -- here is a picture of me from Halloween of last year, dressed as everyone's favourite magician...) I think the line Harish was trying to draw was between my post and the departure of Jack.
This is much different. A big thank you to the members of the Café for all the help, nothing less and nothing more. As for the name change -- it is something I have wanted to do for quite some time. I just wasn't sure how to go about it. I saw no option for it -- so I assumed it couldn't be done. Than I had a firned have to undergo a name change due to circumstances beyond his controll -- so he tipped me off how to have it done. Tony: I'll still be the same guy who was on here last week! After all -- whats in a name?

JEff, I can share the similarity with you. Moving from magic to mentalism was a step I felt like I wanted to take, and as you say, it is refreshing and rewarding to start over. Methods in mentalism may be technically 'easy', but it takes the long hard graft in magic to make it seem realistic, credible, and entertaining.
I also share the similarity with regards approaching the 1000th post. The Café has been a huge resource for learning, and it is amazing to look back at early posts and see your naivety, and no doubt in another 1000 posts I will look back at my position now from a similar point. I think too many people start on the Café, and do not listen to the advice from some of the senior members on here, who have amassed information and experience over many many years - newcomers come on here and put down these people because they feel they know a few tricks and are therefore 'experts'. This has led to some first rate performers not frequenting the Café, which I find very sad indeed. However, onwards and upwards as they say! Simon |

Jeff:
You will not be the same to me. Someone posting under an anonymous screen name is like a shadow in the dark, their words are like echoes and there is always doubt about their credibility. A person posting under their true name takes responsibility for what he or she says and lives with the consequences. These words carry more weight. So, no, you will not be the same, at least to me. Shedding that shadow was my intent! Like I said -- you're all in my inner circle now! Suprised there were no comments on the pic!

Tried the link to the pic, seems like I'm forbidden to use/enter/see....?

Sorry, I did not want to bring up the picture. It doesn't look like Copperfield at all.

Thank you Roger. We had Chinese last night, and that I found those words in my fortune cookie.

I may post under my real name one day. I had a bad experience on another group where I had been honest about my identity. Imagine my horror when a poster wrote a fantasy story that centred on the rape and murder of my family.
I like the people here, but I'm not yet prepared to take certain personal risks again. John
