Hello Café,
I'm interested in adding a Time Prediction bit to my act and seeking some guidance. I'm sure there are a million time prediction effects commercially available but I'm looking for something diferent. I would like to be able to do the following..........Have a large manila envelope hanging in full audience view prior to the start of the act. Have a random spec freely chosen and request he/she name any hour of the day and their favorite color. Next, have another random spec chosen and they too call any minute and their favorite color. Final, have a 3rd random spec come to stage and open the envelope.....the contents inside are a large picture of a hand drawn clock with the exact hour and minute stated by the specs and oh by the way.....the hands of the clock have been drawn in the same favorite colors (hour hand is drawn in spec#1 color and the minute hand is drawn in spec#2 favorite color)as stated by the specs. Final kicker----in the middle of the backside of drawing is the statement "Thank you (name of spec#3) for your assistance". NO STOOGES! Your thoughts/guidance? I'm sure this is in a book somewhere that I just haven't found yet. Thanks for your help! -Brian

I'm actually quite interested in this area of effect too. Curious to see what comes up!

I actually have an online time effect that I use with prospective clients. The method is not technology-based, and the prediction can be printed out before they begin the experiment.
It involves the participant setting their watch to a random hour of their choosing. After they set the time, and without letting me know what it is in any way, they read the printed prediction. It shows clearly the hour they've set on their watch. It is a 100% surefire effect, not a chance thing. It's not something I ever plan on marketing, as I use it professionally. - entity

That sounds like a very nice performance piece. It's also great to hear that you are keeping it safe. Tony |

Can you perform it here on the Café?

I'll give it some thought. If there's interest, perhaps next week I'll try to set something up.

Am I jaded or does that discription above by tuffnavyrn (no offence tuff I know you're brainstorming) sound a little mundane?
There is an element of purpose missing. There needs to be more reason and mystery around such a prediction. Jim? Tony? |

Rick:
We all bring different things to the table and look for different things. I try to have a purpose for what happens in what I do, some type of story point, vocalized or silent, but not everyone is like that. An effect with those aspects could be scripted to be quite effective, or it could be a puzzle. It is all in the presentation. Tony |

So are you saying "Why" should come before "Wow"?
The "Why" is obvious, "Because we can!" Why pull a rabbit out of a hat, only to stick it in a box and have it vanish? Because we can! Why cut a woman in half 0nly to put her back together? Because we can! Why tell a person the name of a card she already knows? Because we can! Do you see a pattern here Rick? |

Huh? Sorry I was reading all the links under your post and got distracted. Did you say something?

- The phases of this effect are all over the place; consider choosing a theme a sticking with it, example 'people remember the moment they heard that JFK was shot; I bet you have other memories that you vividly remember. I want you to recall one of those moments. What was the approximate time? (first prediction) What happened? (second prediction) Who were you with (third prediction?)
- The plot with the favorite colors doesn't play for a large audience - the colors of clock dials are way too hard to make out at even a small distance. And what if someone choose a color that's hard to make out (yellow) and you end up with two faint greyish lines? If you must go with a color selection, just have the entire sheet in a single color when it comes out of the envelope. But again, choose a theme and stick with it. - If you're creative enough to come up with the plot, please go the extra mile and invent the method as well. For research, look into 'Confabulation' type effects.

Or is that the participant's perception of what he has done? MB |

My effect is exactly what I stated: The participant, alone at home, sets their watch to a random time by twirling the stem of their watch. They can watch the hands move while they do this, if they wish, but it's a better effect if they turn the watch face down while they turn the stem, so the time they choose is a surprise to them, too.
When they're done, they read the printed prediction. It says the hour that they stopped at. This is exactly what happens. - entity

Thank you! BTW: About 6:00 PM, in my living room with my mother. She burst out in tears at the news. My father came home early that night as well. It was a sad night. MB: You are picking nits. Leave the guy alone, if he demo's the effect, you will see it done. If he doesn't, you won't. He has already said he is not releasing his effect, so trying to get at the underlying methodology is not right. Tony |

Tony: Not to worry. The methodology of my time effect is so obscure that it's virtually impossible to crack it. If someone can figure it out, then they deserve to use it for themselves.
I think that, if a few more express interest, just for fun I will demo it here, perhaps next week, as this is a busy weekend for me. - entity
