Approximately 35 years ago, I was about 8 years old, I remember seeing a pitch for a paddle trick. The pitchman had a paddle in each hand with a picture of a fly. Using the paddle move he made the fly jump from paddle to paddle. Lot of possibilities, like a mini flea circus. Does anyone else remember this? Any marketability today if found or reproduced? Rick

Sounds like a winner to me, Rick. You could sure have a few thousand made pretty cheap in China. I could see it being a great little gag, and a good trick to teach/give kids who are intertested in magic.

You're right, pretty simple to produce. I spent some time online with a custom swizzle stick (drink stirrer) manufacturer. They can make the paddle to the specs but minimum order of 5,000. Not willing to make the investment of time and money. If anyone wants to run with it be my guest. Rick

Rick, in the time you spent online with the manufacturer, what kind of pricing figures were you given? Also, what time frame were they saying it would take for production and delivery?

There was a routine on the market similar to that but went much further. I believe it was called Fly Circus and it used two paddles with a third held out and used plastic flies mounted on the paddles in ones and twos.

My dealer just got these in, and they're great! Comes with 3 paddles, 6+ plastic flies, a matchbox "Fly Circus Tent", and routine, all for about 6 bucks.

I've made lot's of paddles over the years using craft sticks. You can get a box of 1000 of them for less than ten bucks. Sometimes I use my pocket knife to whittle a handle on one end. At other times I use a belt sander to make a more 'professional' handle. Either way the cost is cheap. I'll leave it to your own creativity to figure out what to put on the finished paddles.

Marvin's Magic had two fly paddles in their Street Magic set, the one with the back pack. Some slum dealers sell the little plastic flies in bulk.

Trek, I have been working with that Electro fun fly circus too, it is my favorite paddle routine yet. This incredibly inexpensive item is so well thought out. I especially appreciate the fly design being bright blue with silver wings and red eyes..very attractive bug as far as bugs go..No gross factor with the girls either. The paddles are sturdy, and impossible to break. The matchbox circus tent is a really nice added element to the whole presentation of circus act.

Hi Novacain!
Is this Fly Circus easy to do? Are you pitching these? If not, Do you think it would be a good pitch item ? Sounds like it would be a good tip builder. I am not familiar with this trick, But I am going to get one and try it out. Thanks for the info on this! ROD |

I've done the fly routine for kids as young as 3yrs, and it plays well for the non english speaking kids too. There is nothing more universally understood as the odd behavior of flies. The beauty of this is in it's simplicity. It fits very well in my arsenal of easy walk around kid magic.

HELLO NOVACAIN:
Thanks for the reply! You have inspired me! I have ordered the fly circus, I want to play around with it to see if it can be worked up into a pitch, At about the same price as a sqirmle, I think it would be a good pitch item. It certainly could get a tip gathering around your joint in a hurry! Especially with a big prop fly swatter and a lot of noise! hahaha Thanks again ROD |
