Hey guys hows it going? I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I need to write a book report on any person from European history for my college class and wanted to do a magician from this time period. Right now I am looking for a good book on Robert Houdin. Does anyone have any good books they recommend for any magician from this time period? Let me know if you have any books that could help me out. Thanks a lot.

Uuumm I can only think of a few. Paul Daniels and the history of magic by John fisher. Good book. Although it is called paul daniels and the history of magic, paul is not in it much. It's a great book talking about all aspects of magic.
I am pretty sure you can get Robert Houdin's memoir's I don't know what it is called though. The Magic Circle here in the uk would. Chat to them about it. They have a huge library and could help you for sure. http://www.magiccircle.co.uk or something like that. I would also suggest, although not a biographical book, The Prestige is an amazing book giving the reader a very deep insight into magic in the late 19th century. It is very good and they story rules too. Hope I was some help Take care, Luke

There is one book about Robert-Houdin that I know of called, "The Magic Man", by E.G. Edmonds. It may be hard to find. It is a lighter read for kids, and written in story form, so best to say, "based in fact".

What time period would you like?
We recently lost Tommy Wonder. And not so long ago lost Fred Kaps. And... would you believe some folks who actually knew those guys are café members? Going back a little further there is some written background on Hofzinser and Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin recently published in BIG books too.

If WWII is of interest, try David Fisher's "The War Magician" (1983). Its' the story of how British stage magician Jasper Maskelyne helped defeat Rommell and the Nazi war machine. It's a really interesting read.

Too bad The Prestige was fictional.
Yes, I guess enough people asked the author if it was based off a true story that he actually commented on the cover that it was a work of fiction... Derek Merdinyan |

Please clarify what you mean by "this time period". It would help in narrowing the search.
As for Robert-Houdin, L&L Publishing at http://www.llpub.com has a book titled "Essential Robert-Houdin" for $100. Another possible source would be Milbourne Christopher's book "The Illustrated History of Magic". I have read this and consider it to be an excellent resource.

It depends on the time period -
but Chung Ling Soo may be a good choice. The are a number or easily available, cheap books and the idea of an American posing as a Chinese adds all kinds of side issues. |
