Wow.
Over 200K views is pretty high. Can you imagine how many John Strong's 4 headed turtle will get? I've heard he has netted a lucrative corporate sponsorship for them from Preparation-H. Incidently,T-ray,how do you like the proposed federal ban on large constrictors? I don't. PK |

THAT'S HILARIOUS!! As far as that ban, I don't like it at all. They have been coming up with that because of snakes that are being released into the wild (by people who can't handle that their python is now 16 feet). They say that in some places, these snakes are becoming the dominant predators and are changing the food chain. We should make sure to protest loud about it though or they will screw us with that. Speaking of snakes though...I was recently contacted by a man who has a 22 ft. anaconda. He wants to get rid of it, but I have never kept a snake that huge. Have you? How big of a cage would I need?

22feet?
C'mon, everone knows snakes ain't got no feet! Seriously- First of all,I'd be real careful with any snake that size. A bite can cut you open like a butcher knife,to the bone. I have several that big, they are not to be taken lightly. They are strong enough to throw you across the room. As for cage size, the cage should have an inside perimeter measuring 1 1/2 times the length of the longest snake in the cage. An 8'X 8' heated and ventilated cage should be fine. The floor and several inches up the wall must be waterproof. While a couple of feet tall is OK for the snake,I would recommend you leave enough headroom for yourself to stand upright comfortably in the cage. The reason being you will have to enter it yourself eventually for a variety of tasks. Anaconda is a water snake. It will need a vessel large enough to immerse itself comfortably. This vessel must be cleaned frequently. Drainage should be kept in mind. I use 3" pipe- easier to flush out the feces that way. (Turds from a big snake resemble elephant poop.) Consider viewability while it's in the water. It will want to soak a lot. That is no good if no one can see the snake. I solve this by sinking the vessel into the floor of the cage. Easier for the snake to enter-everyone can still see the snake. If the snake is feisty, you will need a shield. Preferably transparant. I modified a polycarb motorcycle windshield by bolting a handle onto it at a comfortable balance point. It's used the same as a roman gladiator's shield,on one arm. I've only used it with a few snakes, but I was glad I had it on those occasions. I don't use a steel snakehook. I worry about the snake breaking teeth and bone if it strikes it. I use a heavy wooden cane. The curve in the handle is broad enough to control a big snake gently. It is strong enough not to snap. The wood is soft enough not to break teeth in the event it strikes. In conclusion, you could get by with a lot less than I described. But not for long. Eventually you'd tire of all the risks and cleaning headaches resulting from inadaquate caging and either bail out or rebuild. Unless the snake croaked first. Just treat it with respect and it will treat you the same. PK |

Pete, thanks for all that information. The large drainage pipe was something I had not even thought about. I have a big boa and cleaning it's cage sucks. I've been holding back on this snake because of it's size.....I didn't know they could throw you!!! He says this snake is super tame, but I'll see. You gave me a lot to think about...I appreciate your help.

Tame is a relative thing. You'll be changing its environment, and the people taking care of it. That's a lot.

I would not be surprised if it is as tame as he says.
Still. The key is not to frighten them. Always treat them gently, they usually return the favor. If you accidently hurt it,don't be surprised if it sends you flying while simultaneously blinding you with skunk juice. When I'm in the cage, even with my tamest snakes,I try to never take my eyes off them. I never go in without someone I trust watching from outside. Always have backup. I once had a 250lb snake that I trusted knock me into its water tank as I was cleaning it,apparantly just to prove it could. It made no further move, other than to radiate a sense of amusement. The point is,they are incredibly strong. Much stronger than humans. Always use caution. PK |

I'm not surprised.
Sideshows are back in vogue. I was at the FL State Fair last friday. There were 17 sideshows on the fairgrounds: The Christ Hall World of Wonders- Constantine's single-o Snake,SpiderGirl, LittleWoman,SnakeGirl,LittleHorse and OdditiesMuseum-Wayne Pies' LittleHorse, GiantHorse,GiantPig,GiantSteer,GiantGator, GiantSnake-Serge Corona's ReptileShow,GiantPig, LittleHorse-and Jamie Allen's GiantRedwoodLogHome. That's a lotta freakin shows for one lot, regardless of what decade it happens to be. |

It looked OK, but not great.
I didn't have time to do a count on any of them. I was too busy trying to get a clean shot at John Strong with my trank gun. |
