NOW here's a story you don't hear often.......the Two Headed Snapping Turtles have been eating great and growing FAST!!! Unfortunately, they are going through the stage where one tries to become dominant. The other day, the left head got ****ed at the right and ATTACKED IT!!!! The left head bit into the right's neck and tore the skin. I bugged out......later, it happened AGAIN. This time the left head would not let go of the right's neck. I had to get them out of the tank to separate them and the left's neck was bleeding bad. The next day the psycho side attacked again....they struggled until they turned themselves upside down underwater. I took them to the vet today to get medication and now I'm trying to heal the wound. These are the things you go through with The ONLY TWO HEADED SNAPPING TURTLE In The WORLD!!!!! Pray that I can keep them ALIVE!!! I'm naming them JECKYLL and HYDE.

Better put up a plaque with the story of their names, and a picture of the damage they inflict on each other.

I will.....they keep battling.....I'm really concerned for them. The left head doesn't feel the pain of the right head, so it doesn't understand that it's killing itself.

Wow...So scary having them fight like that.
I wonder if there is any way to bondo (Like the kind used in cars- A common repair tool for turtle shells) some sort of shield between the heads (Just enough to keep the heads from being able to get at one another) or attach a tiny collar like they use on dogs to keep them from pulling out their stitches (Kind of like a satellite dish around their necks) It is only going to get worse as they get older. Good luck T- Keep us posted! Gwyd |

Thanks Gwyd, I had thought of the cone idea also, but I don't know if it will work. They are tough though, so maybe Nature will protect them........I feel like I have the last of an endangered species and it's killing itself!!!

Yeah, some sort of wall rig could be made and somehow attached to the shell.
Brett.

Give me all your ideas....it can only help. If they keep this up, they will die.

I like Gwyd's idea. Plexiglass and 5-minute epoxy are wonderful.
You could use opaque plexi, and they wouldn't be able to see each other. I don't know if they respond to different colors. If they do, use a color they don't find aggravating.

You should check with the vet about what kind of epoxy could be used, you don't want them to die because of fumes or chemicals.
Also, it should be easily removed since they are still growing... this might be more of an expensive endeavor than you think. Brett.

They don't need to see each other......I'm not sure how to construct something like this. There is very little space between their heads.

Do you have a herpetological vet?
Is this animal legal where you are? What are you feeding the guys? My Father in law has a herpetological vet he could recommend if you need one but he is in the Phoenix area. I know nothing about this kind of thing but Pat (my father in law) may, if you want you could send me a PM and I can put him in touch with you. Sincerely, Fitz

Just PMed you..., thanks.
Posted: Sep 29, 2008 2:29am ------------------------------ I just got the injured head to eat one bite of food!!! Posted: Sep 29, 2008 10:11pm ------------------------------ Fitz, I spoke to that vet and he helped a lot! Thank you for the connection. I am also on another search for information....I just received a Two Headed Calf's head that has been preserved in a type of embalming fluid for 30 years. It was own by a vet in the midwest (he delivered it and it had 6 legs)..., he just threw it in this stuff to save it. It's in great shape and looks like it was born this morning. Unfortunately, the preservative it's in is not clear. Can anyone suggest a good clear preservative for this? I have used alcohol in the past..., but I'm not sure about this one. |
