If you want to make a card that is exactly like the one that comes with DA, you just need some shim material and glue. I was at Yoder's a few weeks ago and Rod said he uses .025" shim stock.

If you want to shim one card, well that's a bit more difficult. The best cards are made with the shim material (.015" is ideal) that matches the card in size. Two cards are split and you sandwich the shim between the front and back layer. You don't use the center layer of either card.

I've made a few of these and they have never turned out at the level of quality from the pros such as Cards By Martin. I just buy mine right now...I've given up! Smile

I recall a friend who made them from safety razor blades. He removed the thick edge and used only the thin metal. CAUTION: Obviously, you would need to wear protective gloves and eye protection if attempting this. Once it is glued in the card it would be quite safe. an aside, I suppose you could do the same thing with just regular, double edge steel blades. If you were making them smaller, that is where safety is the big issue.

Yesterday I talked to Neil at Cards by Martin
He has a tremendous amount of speciality, handmade cards available, including shimmed cards. I believe that he starts as thin as
.002" and up to .020" shimms. Up to about
.006" thick the card feels like a regular thickness card. The prices were very reasonable. Check out his website.

Thanks for the link to Cards by Martin. I had never heard of him before and found a number of things there that I've been looking for or thinking about. And a bunch of stuff I would never have thought of!
Very Cool!
