I did't know where exactly to post this, so I closed my eyes and clicked. If it's in the wrong place, please have a mod move it as appropriate.
I just got word that my cousin and his wife are having the family over for Thanksgiving. They asked me to bring a few new card tricks, but I am never that simple, I want to go with a full act. Thus I am asking for some ideas of what effects to use and some patter suggestions. //The Details Place: Cousin's living room Audience: fun loving family, and 2 known heckelers (they know a few card tricks, and will want to inspect everything) Timing: 20-35 minutes Specific requirements: packs small, plays big, ends clean (or can be easily cleaned up) //Material I have: [*]DG Project V2 [*]Sal Piacente's Card Expert Lecture notes v1&2 [*]Greg Wilson In Action (1-3) [*]Corperate Close Up [*]Bill Malone's On The Loose (v4) [*]How To Do Street Magic [*]Crash 1 [*]Ninja 1&2 [*]Kard Klub [*]Wilson's Ring Leader [*]Wilson's Card Stunts [*]Wilson's Pyrotechnic Pasteboards [*]DG Greed [*]DG Next Notes [*]DG Blueprints Notes [*]DG Sh4de [*]DG Torn [*]Gazzo Street Cups [*]Invisible Deck [*]Mystery of the Vanishing Bandana [*]Goldstein's Focus [*]Hummer Card [*]Dream of Aces [*]Tabery's 2 Rope Routine [*]Tabery's 3 Rope Routine [*]My variation of Infusion [*]My variation of Sinful [*]Cassendra Deck [*]Shapeshifter [*]Paperclipped by Jay Sankey [*]Public Transit by Jay Sankey [*]Asteral Projection by Jay Sankey [*]Sam the Bellhop [*]Spongeballs [*]Double Blank cards [*]IT [*]TT Ok, that's a long list. Any suggestions are very much appriciated. I'm sorry for making this such a last second request, but I just found out too. `Skotster[/COLOR] |

You have less than a day to put a set together so I'd recommend doing the routines you already do as you haven't time to learn anything new. A twenty minute set means three or four routines. I'd start with a rope routine, go into a sponge ball do a card trick and end with the cups and balls.

Well, If I had a solid routine that I already do, I would obviously do that. 99% of the material listed is at a performance level that I can get away with with my family.

Pick the five best ones you do. Do them.
Close with Gazzo's cups. One thing you need to know. If you don't have a set that is at performance level, then you aren't ready to do this. You need to have the items for your next trick at hand by feel while you are taking the applause for the trick you just finished. Things need to flow. The "phrases" that take you from one item to the next are as important as the items, themselves. Write a script. I used to shun scripts. Then I learned to work with them. They do make a big difference. They don't restrict you. They free you. I didn't believe that before I tried them, but now I do.

Do not overdo it - 5 to 8 tricks should be more than enough . . .

At our dinner (12 persons) two of the guests are actor/comedians and one is great at doing impersonations (both do voice over work in movies, often doing the star's voices... one example was he had to do "Patrick Stewart" because he was not available, while he was recording as Stewart, Stewart did arrive. After listening he told the director, "Keep using Randy, he sounds more like me than I do!") -- sorry to stray but that was a funny bit.
What did I do? A few one liners, some distant voice vent bits then ONE TRICK... the linking rings (10-inch Owen set). That was enough.

Thanks for the advice, I ended up doing the following:
*Good Trick/Bad Trick by Bill Malone (variation) *Ambitious Card to OmniDeck *Box Spring by Greg Wilson *Cut & Restored rope *Ring Leader by Greg Wilson *Gazzo Cups It went well, though I was competing against the new baby in the family. |

That's some stiff competition!
After some friendly prodding I did some rope bits with string ending with a pop knot, two different methods of mind reading using a borrowed deck, and at my lovely's request ended with a matrix. My competition was two cats that insisted on getting in the middle of everything. String and cats, who would've known. The improptu performance has led to a gig at a local business, woo HOO! |

Off subject, but had to tell. Our dog ate my wife's birthday cake one year. I had asked one of the boys to put it in a safe place. So he put it in a guest room on the bed. Dog got up there with no difficulty at all.

You could load a bunch of silk streamers into the turkey.

Or put a live turkey into a box... a magic word, and it comes out cooked and ready to eat.
