Alright, I realize this is a pretty obscure refrence, but maybe somebody will recognize the schtick and be able to help me out . . .

About twenty years ago I attended a taping of one of the incarnations of the TV show "That's Incredible." This one was called "Incredible Sunday" and featured a lot of magicians.

This one night I was there, there was a close-up magican who went through a series of awesome productions under various cups and things--yeah, I know, not much to go on. But the kicker move was that he lifted up his hat, a little derby that he had just been using, and there was a huge lug nut underneath, as big as the hat. He picked it up and dropped it and it thudded hard against the table.

His patter at this point was something like, "And there's the nut, because you're a nut."

Even though it sounds pretty standard, I swear I've never seen the like of this guy since.

Does anybody either A) know who this guy was or B) have suggestions for where to go about starting to string together a routine like that? Books or DVDs that deal with close-up productions?

Thanks for your help on this, whichever question you're able to answer.

Royston South, you are officially my hero. I've been trying to get that name for twenty years.

Go ahead and have a holiday tommorrow, on me.

Doc

PS Has anyone read "In a Class By Himself" about Alan or any of Alan's own books? Any thoughts on them?

Paul Gertner has a great routine with a hat and dice in his Steel and Silver book. If my memory serves me he was also on That's Incredible.

This definitely was Don Alan. Your memory of the show has "improved" it as time has passed.

In a Class by Himself is actually a rather controversial book. There is a considerable amount of misinformation in it.

Some very important information about his chop cup routine was left out of it, as well as some important information concerning the genesis of "Clyde."

Thanks, everybody.

Bill, if you get the chance, I'd be interested in more about the controversies.

Does anyone know if Don Alan's "Big Nut Production" routine is available for viewing somewhere? Perhaps on a DVD or obscure video tape?

Mark.

It's on the Greater Magic DVD on Don Alan available at Steven's (performance only).

It's similar to Paul Gertner's big die production in Steel and Silver. It gives you a hernia, though.

Don was on that show a few times; I have two or three segments with him on video - his magic was amazing.
