Hi,
I couldn't find this info anywhere on the thread search so here goes. I need to make a permanant image on spirit slates that looks like it could be the chalk. Just wondered what paint, etc anyone may have already used? I thinking anything from white out to tempra paints but don't want to suffer loss of slates if someone has sage advice on this topic. Thanks.

What is your slate made of? If it is made of the stone called "slate" then you probably can't do much damage to it with any type of water based paint you use, but if your slate is painted wood or metal, you might have a problem.

It appears to be wood with the metal piece and magnet imbedded.

I have used white acrylic paint to simulate chalk writing on a wooden slate which had chalkboard paint on it. I figured that if I ever needed to get it off there, I could do so by first applying alcohol to soften up the acrylic paint, and then sanding the wood and respraying it with a chalkboard paint that is readily available now at Home Depot. So far I haven't decided to remove it, so I haven't actually tested part two of my plan, but the white paint is still holding and passes for chalk.

What about using chalk, then applying the artist's chalk fixative?

Try flat white paint. Most hobby shops carry the small bottles for model builders.
