Ok, I know this topic has apeared millions times already, but as I am based in singapore, I am not as fortunate as many of you, who are regularly able to see magic on TV. I finally viewed two of Blaine's specials on AXN channel, which ended yesterday, I decided to share my opinion.
1. I believe much of his magic is TV editing. I'm am a beginner, with one year of experience. I believe his shows do not show the process of 'forcing' when he asked layman to pick a card. and most of his material is not original. i.e. Invisible deck, Raven, Dragon Thread, & the list goes on. 2. Blaine is good with cards, but Jeff McBride will beat him hands down, pants down.... 3. I also didn't care for his Trapped In Ice stunt. I simply don't care if he gets out alive or not. I simply don't understand why people stand outside times square & chant' "David, David, David," 4. But guys , don't get me wrong. there are some positive aspects IMO. Blaine surely create new interest in magic, especially close-up & street magic. Finally, I would rather see another Blaine Special over the masked magician. Thanks,
never try, never know

One argument, alot of magicians perform things on tv that aren't their original creations, ie David Copperfield has alot of people create things that he purchases the rights to.

Yes but try and come up with an entire show by yourself! I know I couldn't.

Like him or not watching one of his specials finally kicked me in the butt to learn this fine art that I have admired for years and for that I am grateful.

It was great to see close up magic on tv when Blaine had his first special.
After watching the special I also saw editing like the Balducci and was very disappointed. He is a very good close up performer but I really don't like camera trickery in close up magic. |

The Balducci would not work on tv done without the aid of a camera, would it?
It woulden't be nearly as effective. |

When everyone was praising him after the first show, I was a bit confused. It was like a singer standing on the street corner singing Beatles tunes and everyone saying what a genius he is. THEY'RE BEATLES SONGS! Don't get me wrong - I think Blaine is the best thing for magic in a long time and I think the originality factor has gone way up with each show (probably cause he's got more money to work with) |
