Hi all, I'm new on here.. Just to introduce myself my name is Mark, I'm 28 years old currently residing in Texas. I've been a magic hobbyist for about 8 years now. I never really got serious until recently. I own RRTCM, ECT, Have numerous videos of Marlo, Ackerman, Sankey and others I've watched but never found that motivation to go out there and "do it". Technically speaking, I know tons of sleights very well and just don't have the inventive thinking to put together a repitoire to go out and do something. I live in a small town where magic could easily make me wealthy if I just went after it and did it.. I just need advice from members on here who been in magic a while..I'm going to be posting a video of me on here soon to let you see how I handle the cards and tell me what you think about it and so on. I've got a wide array of knowledge on techniques present and past I just don't know how to put it all together...All feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Well, a rather simple but to the point reply would be what I honestly think you should do.
Just go out and do it to a stranger, once you've done it once, that will be all the motivation you need to go out and do it again. Don't worry TOO much about "what to do" a simple effect can impress a layman, even if you don't think it's particularly impressive so just take what you KNOW you can do and do it. It's not all just skill, it's presentation, I can tell you, that one sleight can make an AMAZING effect if proper patter was done before hand. You might mess up, just like everybody else, but, what good is that 8 years of practice if you haven't spread the joy that is magic to a stranger? I've only been doing this for 4 months maybe, and I've done it for total strangers, messed up, made a fool out of myself...But, at the same time I did some good tricks and put a smile on people's faces, that alone, is a good enough reason for me to practice this stuff for the rest of my life. (check out my post in "What happened was this..."My first real experience" if you want to read the full story) But at any rate, just do it ! If you've practiced enough you should be confident in your abilities, that'll give you some reassurement. Don't think about it, just the next time you want to do a trick, pick a person, and walk up and bring a little magic into their life. It'll all be worth it once you've done it. |

Agreed. don't try anything fancy or spectacular. don't think to yourself, I must fool them else theres no point.
Keep it simple, if you want to add a 'couple' of flourishes or fancy moves to show a little more of your ability, then do so, but try to work on presentation and entertainment, that's more important when you start in my opinion. Technique can be learned, presentation can't, so work on it yourself now |

Don't forget to have fun! that's what its all about. Without the presentation or fun... its just a puzzle. You simply cannot give what you do not have. Enjoyment and fun is what we all need to have inside man! You practiced hard, you got your move to a level of confidence, the patter is down pat, you are ready to improvise etc..... When you have paid your dues..., have fun and collect your magic dividends. Looking foreward to your videos.

Technically speaking, I know tons of sleights very well and just don't have the inventive thinking to put together a repitoire to go out and do something.......I just don't know how to put it all together. What type of venues are you interested in? The reason I ask is because there are differences in routining a 'show' when working close up at a table and strolling. Whether it's a half hour show of several effects or a set of three effects both have an opener, middle effect(s) and closer. To me there are two ways to present card work. One is to present it as magic. Magical effects that come to mind are mental effects, rising cards and torn and restored. There are many others for sure. The other is to present it as skill. Poker deals, pseudo-demonstrations of false deals, controls, etc. Putting the effects together as a show might go something like this.
A strolling set of three effects might include Sankey's 'Bound to Fool', ACR, Card to Pocket or Wallet. These are just some quick ideas. Hope it helps somewhat. |

Thanks Magicman,
It is hard for me to comment. The quality of a magic routine is not only depending on the quality of the sleights, but also on the story created around it and the way it is told. I know many guys that are fantstic card workers - but are very poor presenters. Andy

Technique is okay. The Vernon Shift is a good way to work with some effects that incorporate those particular cards. But the shift alone an effect does not make. For some really nice 4 Ace assemblies look into Bannon's "Dear Mr. Fantasy". One thing to remember about routining. You usually have 30 secs to make an impression or else you'll lose your audience's attention, so make your opener an "eye popper". Keep the audience wanting more and gauge yourself by how your audience reacts. Is or are the effect(s) strong enough to make me a good reputation? The only way to find this out, is to do it and accept failure as well as success. Knowing when to stop can be difficult, you have to be able to "read" your audience, but always end with an effect as strong or stronger than the opener. There has to be smooth transition between your effects in your routine or else the audience will become confused or antsy because they will constantly have to change their attention. Put together some effects that you can do flawlessly and string them together into a smooth routine...then jump into the water. The only way to learn how to swim is to get wet. Hope this helps.

Your technique isn't bad, but yeah, I have to echo what others have said. People want to see routines. It can get a little odd working on sleight after sleight, training them in isolation, then wondering why this isn't impressing an audience. Come up with some routines and do the sleights in context. That's really important.
As for the sleights, remember the best way to give the impression stuff is lost in the deck, act like you don't care! Some of the sleights you did have some pauses, or you seem a bit too careful at one point. Just do the strip out of the other pack and cut and get it over with! . Quick and fleeting! For the side steal, try curling your right forefinger in, will make your hand look better. And for the Midnight Shift, try to get it smoother and don't rush it! (I hate when I see people do this, it can look even better if done at a slower pace!). |

I know the strip out on the table had a pause, I told ya the deck is worn out and it's not easy to strip them with a worn out deck. The midnight shift I did was a variant of Draun's it's not the original. I was just showing my general handling of cards. Not routines or showing off. But, If you want I could re-post a video and be very technical and hold my hand over the lower half while I do the Marlo shift like I do in real life performance, Or I could do the strip-out on the table and continue on without a pause.
