Mem deck can get you the best effects you can get with a deck a card. Look at Tamariz, Aronson, Davidson, or M Close Luckiest card in Las Vegas.
What about the spec tells you any poker deal and you deal that to him ! |

I'm currently working on memorizing the Aronson Stack order. It's going fairly well. Luckily, being able to memorize something has nothing to do with mathematical ability. And I have none of that which is why I'm a bit worried that I won't be able to ever use a stack for a great deal of work. I really cannot even add or subtract numbers above 10. Never could. Not without using my fingers or the stripes on the curtains and whatnot. (I have other redeeming qualities).
I think that it is a perfectly reasonable question when rowdymagi5 asks to see some examples. I have no idea what tricks would appeal to me either and where to locate them. I may or may not have a use for my new stack knowledge. But I figure that it doesn't hurt to learn something anyway, just in case. Usually when I stumble onto something new, I am stopped by the fact that it refers to some other technique that I do not yet know. So I have to find and learn that and it also requires knowledge of another technique. It will be great to already know a stack when I suddenly come across a trick I really love. And I'm sure I will. At the moment I'm a bit confused about how it all works. I'm sure I will understand more and more as I read. In any case, learning this gives me a feeling of increased self esteem as I can now fool myself into believing that I'm entering a bigger league than a lot of other people

There are several great effects which involve the spectators birthday. Check out Simon Aronson's Calendar Card, or Fate, of similar effects by Mike Close and Alex Elmsley. All build spectator interest because they involve the date of their birth, all are great magically and all involve a memorized deck.

I don't think the issue is that there are not any great md effects out there. I think the real issue is that it's easy to create bad md magic... and so, sorting through the available effects to find one you like could be daunting. After all, nobody wants to see you "weighing" cards and such. There are a lots of amazing effects to be performed with the md. You could also do some major improving on your current routines by adding a md. For example: A no-set up version of out of this world,(you don't even have to peek at the faces of the cards as you begin to remove them randomly from the pack). You could also do face down versions of sandwich effects. You could change lots of your current routines from pick-a-card effects to name-a-card effects (triumph comes to mind). Here are a couple of things for you to consider:
1 Any Card Any Number (there's a no math version in Mind, Myth and Magic) 2 Name a card triumph 3 No peek, no set up out of this world 4 No peek version of any poker hand dealt to any position (Aronson stack only) 5 An almost unfair version of Vernon's "the card trick that can't be explained" 6 Be able to cull particular cards FACE DOWN, with no peeking 7 ultra clean lie detector effects 8 impromptu invisible deck routines... I could go on and on... but it would be much more fun if you did more of the digging yourself. The md is a powerful weapon, it's up to you to figure out how to bring it to battle. |

Michael Paul put together a great list of many things you can do with a Mem-Deck. I would suggest (and perhaps this is a sub category of his #6) one addition: Being able to force any card at any time without having to look through the cards to locate your special force card first.

Like a coin [, a gaffed card, a marked deck, or anything else, a stack is just one more tool in the magician's toolbox.
You use these magical tools to make the magic. Some magicians are more familiar and comfortable with some tools than others, and that's okay. But try all the tools that are available to you to see which ones work for you. You might just be pleasantly surprised.

While I have enjoyed Jazzing with my mem deck, as well as using it in some gambling routines, I have a four phase routine that incorporates various performer's tricks that I have found fairly rewarding as well as entertainng and baffling.
The first two phases are borrowed from Gene Anderson, wherein he determines the missing selected card by a quick 1/10th of a second riffle of the deck. He then does it again by riffling the deck to his ear, listening for the sound of the missing card. The third phase is from Gaucci wherein the spectator cuts off a small portion of the deck, thinks of one of the cards and then shuffles the packet before you read his mind without actually looking at any of the cards. The fourth phase is from Osterland wherein the remaing portion of the deck is cut several times by the spectator and the top or bottom three cards are placed into his pocket. You then read his mind as he pulls any of the three cards out of his pocket. That's six cards determined without ever having to actually run through the deck to look for one. Ken Abbott |

For the last 25 years or so, memorized deck effects are the only card tricks I do on the radio. I don't have to be there and it makes an impact. If I'm there I use Future Foretold.

Hi Dennis hope you are well. Mr O'Malley is correct there is a description in Las Vegas Kardma and I have an updated version in my lecture notes and on my DVD. My web page address is: azcardexpert.com.
To the other people in this thread that doubt the strength of working with a memorized deck. Here is the effect of my Three Card Location. Three people each cut off a section of the deck. Without any fishing or calculations you reveal the first and third spectators cards. For the second spectator you ask him to remember his card and then shuffle his packet. You then ask the spectator to fan the packet so the cards face you (about 2 - 3 seconds) and then reshuffle the packet. You tell the spectator that you have memorized his packet. You now proceed to call all the cards you saw in his hand but you tell the spectator that you will save the card he is thinking of until last. This is a very strong trick and gets great reaction. Andrew Wimhurst did it on Austrailian television on a show about psychics and if I'm not mistaken received a lot of comments about him really being a psychic. Of course since I'm not psychic I could be mistaken in this regard. Incidently the method on the DVD and my notes is a little different than in the Ackerman book. Steve |

It's one of several good items Steve's DVD - those who don't own the DVD are missing out on some nice stuff.

Hi Steve,
I'm very well... and busy as usual. Working on a new book and DVD, doing shows, etc. Spent some time with Tom and Mary last week. I'll visit your website and order your DVD. Haven't seen you "work" in too long. Dennis Loomis

Hi Guys,
I haven't been exposed to Darwin Ortiz's Mem deck effects as yet. Would someone please tell me where book of Darwin's I can find these effects: Remote Control Maximum Risk Zen Master The Last Laugh I am assuming that these effects would be in either "At the Card table" or "Card Shark" but if you could please confirm that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Regards Baobow |

Hi Allan,
From memory, the thread you are looking for just identified the following list of effects. Coincidently Kjellstrom posted the same list in this thread. I personally love every single Aronson and Close effect listed below. The level of detail and thought process that Aronson goes through to explain his effects is just amazing:- Simon Aronson: Histed Heisted The Invisible Card Two Beginnings Past, Present, Future Everybody's Lazy Four-Part Harmony Twice as Hard Method to/in Our Madness Darwin Ortiz: Remote Control Maximum Risk Zen Master The Last Laugh Juan Tamariz: Control in chaos (Mnemonica) Tamariz/Four of a Kind Crown Jewels Four Stop Intersection Michael Close: Invisible Deck Luckiest Cards in Las Vegas The Birthday Book Allan Ackerman: Invisible Jokers Finally Matched Others: Mental Triumph Martin Joyal's Poupart Trick Steve Ehler's 3-Card Location |
