Joshua,
No clip...other than my normal promo video availalbe through agents. Between the DVD and the written instructions, I basically give you everything you need to perform the routine...word for word script...jokes...gags...timing...audience management...additional ideas...even 'costuming' for a game show. It is VERY detailed! Thanks, Cody S. Fisher

I've used TFA for some time now, but with an orange. I sometimes think that people may not know how the bill got into that lemon but once they see the lemon, from previous experience, they just know that's where it is. Can an orange or other fruit be used with 'Bet Your Bucks?'

On Saturday I received my order from Hocus Pocus. I am 3/4 of the way through the DVD and needless to say, I am extremely pleased with the routine, method and entire production in general. You cover every detail so thoroughly that little is left to the imagination. It is well worth the money as I am certain that this will be the highlight of many performances to come.
Unfortunately, however the main gimmick that is included in routine was damaged. It certainly was no wonder, since the entire trick came without packaging!! Without going into detail, all I can say is that the items needed for the performance of this trick were simply placed in a shipping box, packed with the horrible little white packing things that stick to your hands when you try to touch anything in the box. I emailed Cody to let him know about this with the suggestion that there should at least be packaging for such an expensive item. After calling Hocus Pocus to let them know about the damaged item, I discovered that there is packaging and it does indeed come packaged. Well someone at Hocus Pocus is doing an awfully sloppy job and if Cody Fisher has entrusted his rights to them, he should be aware of this! After shelling out $300, one would think that you would not have to fish through all of that packaging material to make sure you have all of the items in the box. I know that Hocus Pocus will replace my damaged gimmick, but really Paul, if I were Cody, I would be a bit annoyed if my product was treated so carelessly. My only disappointment with this DVD is that it does not show Cody actually doing the routine. Of course, this can be both good and bad. We certainly would not want to be doing it in exactly the same way, but since there are numerous explanations of methods for presentation and misdirection, it would have been nice to see it done in a real life situation. Aside from that, this is well worth the money and highly recommended. |

Hey Martello,
Thanks so much for the kind words concerning the routine, DVD, and especially the gimmick. I am very happy to hear that you will be using this...please let me know of your success! I am anxious to see what others are going to do with this concept! Concerning the packaging of the product, I am very sorry that your gimmick was damaged. The gimmick is actually very solid...must have taken quite a "blow" to dislodge! Anyway, Hocus Pocus (and I) stand behind ALL our products 100%. This is the main reason that I have entrusted them with a project this massive! ANY problems and Hocus Pocus will make it right...Guaranteed! When discussing how to package this with Paul, we finally decided on the following. First was the custom box...we needed a mailing box that was just the right size and proper dimensions. The sample that I received was packaged according to my instructions. In the bottom of the box is the written instructions, sealing gimmicks, and audio "Bet Your Bucks" soundtrack CD. On top of that is the loading gimmick (wrapped in plastic for protection). And finally we added the instructional DVD, some pay envelopes, and a few markers to get you started. Once all the props were properly placed in the box, we added foam packing peanuts to surround everything. Again I am very sorry about your gimmick...it must have been damaged in shipping somehow? Considering how much care was taken in the packaging… I can only guess that the UPS guys must have been playing kickball with it while on a lunch break! ;-) Anyway, just wanted you to know that we acknowledge your problem and we will make it right so that you are a satisfied customer. Take care my friends, Cody S. Fisher

Irishghost,
This is product is not for everyone. My goal of responding to your above post is not to encourage you to buy this...I really have no bias on your magic purchases...but I do respect your opinion. I will explain why no performance was included... I have intentionally left out a live “performance” of this on the DVD. Not that I am trying to “keep it a secret”...Heck, I have performed this at The Magic Castle BOTH in the parlor and close up rooms for the past several years! The routine is definitely not a secret. In the DVD and written instructions I outline my entire script and routine. I also provide you with my personal copyright free custom music and the message that I use to close all my shows with! This was very difficult to do as the instructions not only cover the routine; they also detail the script, the jokes, the gags, the timing, staging, costuming, and more importantly the reasoning behind every single action. When watching a "demo"...none of the 'real work' comes across...all you see is MY completed product. The written instructions cover every aspect of the routine that you may encounter and provide well thought out explanations for such things as: Justification for borrowing the bill, Justification for folding the bill, Justification for signing the bill, etc. This kind of detailed information simply can not be obtained from watching a demo. Also, my goal in sharing this with everyone is that you will take this information and create something that is uniquely YOU. All too often when we watch a professional performance of an effect we think to ourselves “that” is the way is has to be done. (I find myself guilty of this too!) I have given you everything you need to take this and make it YOURS! For those that have purchased from me in the past, you know that I only release quality products that work in the real world. I am especially proud of this one! Take care my friend, Cody S. Fisher

Martello:
I, too, received a damaged item. I was dissapointed by that AND that it was shipped in the second week of January (instead of the end of December as advertised by HP). Also the DVD said there would be more than one s***t of another item, but I received just one. I also craved to see a clip. The item is sold as a worker, but there is no real world performance clip. I would like to see a few different venues in action. Cody doesn't want Cody-clones, but on the other hand, the product provides a script, costume ideas, everyting but a clip... It seems like a clip would be a natural. I am dissapointed that I was dissapointed.

I gotta weigh in on the absence of a performance demo. How could a demo possibly not be a good idea?? And while I have purchased most of Cody's products, and don't question his integrity, I find his explanation for the absence of a demo unintelligible. So: I certainly won't commit myself to not purchasing the item, but I will do so only after a number of reviews are available.

Alan,
With all due respect, I have to disagree with your opinion about Cody's decision and explanation about not posting a demo. Cody's explanation for not posting a demo is very intelligible, rational and reasonable. While the main substance of many effects can be conveyed in a short demo especially involving a visual change, appearance/disappearance and/or transformation, there are some effects whose inherent qualities do not lend themselves to a proper and adequate portrayal in a brief video display. I have not seen Cody's Bet your Bucks but the very nature of this routine would not lend itself to be portrayed in a brief video demo. The inherent qualities of this routine consiting of a running gag, reasons for borrowing the bill, reasons for marking the bill and reasons for folding the bill all all part of the effect and routine which make it stand out from other bill to lemon routines cannot be sew together in a short video demo. I think, in my opinion, that Cody's explanation is very plausible and credible. I have many, if not all, of Cody's videos/DVDs and marketed products and I have ALWAYS been EXTREMELY SATISISFIED with all of his products as being made for the real world. While there may be some effects that I would not buy without seeing a demo, I would not hestitate for a second to purchase something that Cody markets with or without a demo. Best regards, Michael Siegel

Martello and Squando,
Despite your dissappointments, and now that you have had some time to play with the gimmicks, what do you think of the method and the premise? Is it a fooler? How does it compare to other methods that you are aware of (The Final Answer, for example). I am curious about the lemon "seeling" gimmick-is the lemon truly examinable? Curious minds want to know. I currently close my shows with the Teleportation Device bill to lemon (although I do not do the final signed bill to egg, because it is messy). I have wanted to do a signed bill to lemon and am interested in Cody's premise and method. Just my input on the performance clip controversy: I think Cody's rational is reasonable for leaving out a performance clip, but I think that should be advertised before purchase of the item. I would have assumed he would provide a performance clip because his previous DVD's include live performance clips; I think seeing those are valuable to see timing and just to watch a good performer interact with laypersons. |

For those in a hurry, let me start with the bottom line: this gets my highest recommendation: 10/10.
This is my review for “Bet Your Bucks” by Cody Fisher. I have been waiting for this routine for quite some time now - when I first heard about it, I was honestly surprised because I have also been performing a game-show type routine for my bill in lemon. My routine is based on Doug Malloy's Lemon Game routine combined with bits from Scott Alexander's Final Answer routine. Until this routine came out, I really didn't think there was much more that could be added to the method or plot for the bill in lemon. Boy was I wrong! The Effect A borrowed (signed) bill is used to play a little game show (game of chance) with an audience member. In the end the audience member looses their bill and has to settle on the consolation prize. (A lemon) When the lemon is cut open the volunteer finds their signed bill! The Materials You receive the loading gimmick, the sealing gimmick, some pay envelopes, some markers, an instructional DVD, a music CD, and several pages of written instructions. There is a one time set up that you will need to do with your loading device. Due to the fact that different countries have different currency, each individual will need to do this themselves. Originality The method used in this routine, as far as I know, is entirely unique. I have never seen this method to load a lemon or to seal a lemon. It's VERY easy to do. In most bill to lemon routines I find myself very nervous (almost rushed) when loading the lemon. In this routine, the 'move' if you can call it that, is done in plain view of the audience and the action is fully justified! I also like that there is a motivated reason for signing, folding, and borrowing the bill. Finally, as far as I know, this is the only version out where the spectator can cut open the lemon. Once loaded and sealed, the volunteer would have a VERY tough time to see ANY work at all on the lemon Prop Quality There are actually two main props involved. One is an actual prop…the other is not really a prop in every sense of the word. The main prop is the device that is used to load the bill into the lemon. It is made of thick plastic and looks fairly sturdy. The second “prop” is the lemon sealing gimmick. It’s hard to really review this without saying too much…I will say that the quality is perfect and it does exactly what is says it will do. Instruction Quality This comes with both written instructions and DVD instructions. Both are VERY detailed and very easy to understand. After understanding what the prop does and basically how to use it, I didn’t think the DVD would be very long. On the contrary, the DVD is almost 3 hours long. Cody goes into very intimate detail for every aspect of this routine. I was very impressed with the amount of information that was given. Cody is a real “thinker” when it comes to his material and this is no exception. The “Bet Your Bucks” routine is very commercial, and has MANY jokes that I haven't heard before. Besides the stand up version, Cody’s also shows how to use this in a trade show and close up situation. Final Comments All in all, the routine is practical, entertaining, funny, and deceptive. I'd say it's well worth the money, and for those performing regularly, considerably more. Although it would have been nice to see Cody perform this, the effect does come with Cody’s word-for-word script. He even tells you where to buy costumes, what additional props you COULD get, and goes as far as to tell you exactly where to get anything you'd need for it! Personally, I'm extremely pleased and give this routine my highest recommendation. 10/10 Alym

Dear Squando,
First of all, you are complaining about it being delayed. This was a "pre-order" with and "estimated" delivery date. We never advertised this as "limited quantity" or "must order now" or any other sneaky marketing tricks to get you to purchase this before it came out on the market. The only thing we did do was to offer free shipping for your pre-order. Perhaps you should hold off on your decision to make pre-order purchases in the future. There was a delay in shipping (about 10 days) as we were waiting on the DVD to be duplicated. Due to the holidays, the duplication company we used got behind and that in turn caused us to have a delay that was out of our control. For those that know Paul (and Hocus Pocus’ integrity) you could have simply contacted them at any time and had your order canceled and your card charged back the full amount...no questions asked. This is the reason that I entrust so many of my products to Hocus Pocus...the customer is always right. You mention that you only received "one" of a certain item...there were actually two packaged in every box. However when boxing up over 150 units at the same time...there may be a mistake made...we are only human! If you didn't receive something...simply contact HP and they will take care of it immediately...again no questions asked! Instead of complaining here why not contact the individuals who can actually solve your problem? Again HP will take care of you if you let them! Concerning your damaged item...I talked with Paul this morning at length. So far we have shipped out a very large number of these and (so far) have only had 5 units that were defective. Keep in mind this item was custom fabricated for this specific trick...so naturally there are going to be a few mistakes. HP would never knowingly send out a damaged item and ALL 5 individuals that received a damaged item were immediately sent a replacement via NEXT DAY air (for free). As far as I am concerned that is what I call customer service. Concerning the "performance clip" that you were disappointed about not seeing...well I NEVER said this would come with a performance clip...go back and read the ad. I am not sure how I can disappoint you by not giving you something that I never said I would? I have already explained myself on this and will not repeat it again. If after reading my entire audience tested script, watching the 2+ hours of DVD instructions, giving you MY custom music for the effect, teaching several ways to use this in conjunction with other routines (such as Lemon Game), revealing my magic castle close up and parlor acts, sharing my resource links for costumes and other additional props...if you can't come up with a routine...then perhaps this is just not for you my friend! I don’t know how much more of myself or this routine I could have shared… On that note...I have already spoken with Paul this morning and he is waiting for your phone call...just drop him a line and he will be more than happy to refund your money. Again, that is what I call customer service! We have gone back and checked all the remaining inventory...every item is in perfect working condition. If however there is anyone else out there who has any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact Hocus Pocus 1-800-407-4040 immediately and they will take care of you...100%! Take care, Cody S. Fisher

Why would anyone complain about the DVD not coming with a performance routine, even though it was never advertised as such? Are you THAT concerned with being another clone? Before you answer, your responses of "Well, I'd like to see how it plays to an audience" is merely a cover-up of your desire to copy something word for word. Why would you want that?
Wouldn't it be smarter to read the script, omit and add those bits of business, interaction and jokes and that are you, and continue to refine the routine to suit your character? That's what Cody did when he read about Terry Seabrooke's Burnt Banknote routine, and look what he's released: something completely different and unique! Only 20 years ago, magicians had very limited (and expensive) video and no DVD on which to study, so they were "forced" to learn from books and manuscripts for the most part. These were (and still are) the real magicians that stand apart from the rest because they interpreted the printed word differently and took the time to create their own routines. I picked this up immediately when I saw its potential and discarded the instructions because I simply did not want to be another clone out there doing Cody's routine word for word. I watched the DVD to get acquainted with the props and materials. When it came time for the routine, I turned off the DVD and went to work writing some comedy to suit the props and my character. I like the fact that this does not rely on any extra gimmicks to carry, such as thumb tips, special knives, accessories, etc. Is my routine finished? No. And it shouldn't be. Things like this SHOULD take time, and anyone who cannot wait for something to arrive in the mail so they can perform it this weekend should not only be ashamed of themselves, but should also acknowledge that they are doing the art of magic a huge disservice. I HOPE this routine is not for everyone and that not everyone is picking it up. If you are happy with your current Borrowed Bill routine, then don't change it. If you are looking for something new to add to your show or even existing routine, I highly recommend this version as it is as complete as it gets, but it also is open enough for you to create your own routine around it. FWIW... |

The Curse of the Bill in Lemon....
Three magicians have constructed brilliant and original methods of doing a signed bill in lemon offering essentially everthing to do the routine... Doug Malloy "The Lemon Game" Scott Alexander "The Final Answer" Cody Fisher "Bet Your Bucks" These methods and presentations are outstanding. Each of these performers have essentially tipped their original thought and experience developing the routine as well as "lessons learned". Why is it when these effects are released, people complain so much about what they recive and their disappointment. OK....the damaged merchandise will be replaced and it really isn't their fault But come on....the audience will perceive a signed bill appearing in an impossible location! It doesn't look more magical than that! Until someone invents a device that will magically cause the bill to dematerialize and reappear in a lemon that requires NO SKILL, NO PERFORMANCE ABILITY and NO PRACTICE, people will continually complain. Me, on the other hand, am in awe at the brillance behind these men and their marketed methods. Bravo Cody, Scott and Doug! |
